Sketchbook John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). Sketchbook, 1871-1872. Graphite, charcoal, watercolor and white chalk on paper, Sketchbook: 9 3/16 x 11 7/8 x 1/2 in. (23.3 x 30.2 x 1.3 cm). Regarded as one of the leading portraitists and watercolorists of the Gilded Age, the expatriate John Singer Sargent was also a consummate draftsman. He drew prolifically and precociously from a young age, as evidenced by this sketchbook, which he used while traveling in Germany in 1871-72, at age fifteen. Sargent filled many of the pages with his exercises in copying classical statuary from the famous plaster cast collection of Dresdens Albertinum museum. The sketches show a variety of approaches, from broad, linear strokes to refined tonal modeling. American Art 1871-1872

A landscape painter who devoted himself to the careful study of nature, Johnson traveled throughout the Northeast collecting sketches that he would then use to create highly detailed paintings in his studio. Some of his haunts included the Catskill and Adirondack mountains in New York and the White Mountains in New Hampshire, where this sketch was made. American Art July-October 1851

Landscape (recto); Landscape (verso) 1489-90 Perugino (Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci) Italian Discovered by George Goldner at auction in 1992, this view of wooded hills descending toward a river is an extremely rare example of a landscape drawing by the artist, and is drawn in a delicate chiaroscuro technique with brown ink and white on a dark ground, full of atmospheric effects. A very similar motif appears in the background of Perugino's Vision of Saint Bernard (Alte Pinakothek, Munich), an altarpiece painted about 1489 for the Nasi Chapel in the Cistercian church of Santa Maria Maddalena di Cestello, known now as Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi, near Florence. The teacher of Raphael (whom he outlived) and one of the painters in highest demand by patrons throughout Italy in the late fifteenth century, Perugino produced major works in Rome, Perugia, Bologna, Cremona, and Florence, as well as in the smaller towns of his native regions of Umbria and the Marches.
