The book was taken apart and set up, the magazines with text and illustrations have their own object number. The cover and bracts are included in the main record. The first edition of the book was published in 1600. This is a edition of 1611 by Johann Bussemacher, where the original images have been copied counter-sided and numbered again, 1-28. Structure of the book: The Tuscan, Doric, Ionian, Corintic and Composite orders are treated successively. Oliver Goldsmith ca. 1770 Drawn and probably etched by Henry William Bunbury British This caricature of Goldsmith, the novelist, playwright and poet, was designed and likely etched by his friend Henry William Bunbury (an inscription by Horace Walpole next to an impression that he owned, ascribes both roles to the artist). As the younger son of Sir William Bunbury, 5th baronet, the artist's income came mostly from a position as equerry to the Duke of York. Bunbury made a few early etchings around 1770, then relied on professional etchers to transform his drawings into prints, with examples published into the nineteenth century.. Portrait of Auguste Rodin ca. 1900 Victor Peter French Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was already world-famous at the time of this portrait, which is an especially touching act of homage by an exact contemporary. Victor Peter was much in demand as a finisher of other sculptor's marbles, including Rodin's, although he is better remembered as a maker of small portrait medallions and charming reliefs with animal subjects. A medallion of Rodin was among those Peter showed at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. Here his style is monumental as befitting his subject - the massive countenance filling the space, the beard indeed falling over the edge - but the carving is carried out with an ineffable tenderness.This is the Museum's only European example in marble of a low-relief style, essentially adapted from the rilievo schiacciato of the Early Renaissance, as it was practiced around the turn of the century and notably in America by such artists as Augustus Saint-Gaudens..
