Operation Deep Freeze I - Anchoring The Eastwind In Ice. Anchoring the Eastwind in ice. To anchor the Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind in heavy ice at McMurdo Sound it took seamanship skill different from that used in anchoring a ship in open water or mooring her to a regular harbor dock. Here "deadman anchors" were planted in the ice to hold the ship fast against the ice shelf, while off-loading cargo. A "deadman anchor" is a wooden plank about 6 feet long, 10 inches wide, and 3 inches thick with a line strapped around it. The plank is buried a distance away from the ship about 3 feet deep in the ice with the exception of a length of line which protrudes above the surface.
