CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Construction workers assist as a crane lowers a portion of the launch pad for the Project Morpheus prototype lander onto a transporter at the north end of the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch pad is being moved to a different location at the landing facility to support the next phase of flight testing. Morpheus completed its seventh free flight test on March 11. The 83-second test began at 3:41 p.m. EDT with the Morpheus lander launching from the ground over a flame trench and ascending to 580 feet. Morpheus then flew its fastest downrange trek at 30 mph, travelling farther than before, 837 feet. The lander performed a 42-foot divert to emulate a hazard avoidance maneuver before descending and touching down on Landing Site 2, at the northern landing pad inside the automated landing and hazard avoidance technology ALHAT hazard field. Morpheus landed within one foot of its intended target. Project Morpheus tests NASAs

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The second stage, port booster and spacecraft adapter, the remaining stages for the United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy boosters for NASAs upcoming Exploration Flight Test-1, or EFT-1, mission with the Orion spacecraft, have been transported in their containers to the Horizontal Integration Facility, or HIF, at Space Launch Complex 37 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida for uncrating. The segments arrived by barge at the U.S. Army Outpost wharf at Port Canaveral. At the HIF, all three booster stages will be processed and checked out before being moved to the nearby launch pad and hoisted into position. The spacecraft adapter will connect Orion to the ULA Delta IV, and also will connect Orion to NASA's new rocket, the Space Launch System, on its first mission in 2017. During the EFT-1 mission, Orion will travel farther into space than any human spacecraft has gone in more than 40 years. The data gathered during the flight will influence design deci

The bridge component of an Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge is emplaced Jan. 6, 2024, over the second entryway crossing into a work area at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn. AVLBs carry a deployable bridge and are designed to allow tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other tactical vehicles to cross small rivers, gaps and other terrain obstacles on the battlefield. The AVLB was commercially delivered to Arnold from Fort Campbell, Ky., on Nov. 30, 2023, and was needed to move a large crane across an Arnold alleyway where the axle load limit was less than the weight of the crane. The AVLB was operated by a Guardsman with the 190th Engineer Company of the Tennessee National Guard, while Guardsmen from the 194th Engineer Brigade directed and guided the operation.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractors haul ash and debris in plastic-lined dump trucks from the Lahaina properties impacted by the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires. Once fully loaded, the plastic is pulled over the top and secured in-place to prevent the ash and debris from becoming airborne during transport to the Temporary Debris Storage site in west Maui. Information, including the trucks empty weight, is written on a white placard during initial truck certification. Upon arrival to the TDS site, the trucks are weighed on large scales. With the known empty vehicle weight and the new loaded weight, along with some other driver information from the placard, the proper details can be entered into a contractor database that helps USACE track ash and debris volume, and payment information for the contractors. USACE contractors place ratchet straps over the loaded debris in dump trucks. Strapping down the load is a requirement when hauling debris, ash and soil. This requirement is in addition t

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - The interstage adapter, or ISA, for NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 mission, or OCO-2, arrives at the mobile service tower at Space Launch Complex 2 on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. OCO-2 is scheduled to launch into a polar Earth orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II 7320-10C rocket in July. The ISA is the interface between the Delta II first and second stages. The second stage engine fits within the ISA. Once in orbit, OCO-2 will collect precise global measurements of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere and provide scientists with a better idea of the chemical compound's impacts on climate change. Scientists will analyze this data to improve our understanding of the natural processes and human activities that regulate the abundance and distribution of this important atmospheric gas.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - The lid is removed from the transportation trailer containing the fairing for NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive mission, or SMAP, in the Building 836 high bay on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The fairing will protect the SMAP spacecraft from the heat and aerodynamic pressure generated during its ascent to orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Space Launch Complex 2. SMAP will provide global measurements of soil moisture and its freeze/thaw state. These measurements will be used to enhance understanding of processes that link the water, energy and carbon cycles, and to extend the capabilities of weather and climate prediction models. SMAP data will also be used to quantify net carbon flux in boreal landscapes and to develop improved flood prediction and drought monitoring capabilities. Launch is scheduled for November 2014.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A tractor-trailer will transport NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory, or GRAIL, spacecraft to the Astrotech payload processing facility in Titusville, Fla., where it will be processed for launch. An Air Force C-17 cargo plane flew the spacecraft from the Lockheed Martin plant in Denver, Colo., to the Shuttle Landing Facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket that will carry GRAIL into lunar orbit already is fully stacked at NASA's Space Launch Complex 17B and launch is scheduled for Sept. 8.The GRAIL mission is a part of NASA's Discovery Program. GRAIL will fly twin spacecraft in tandem orbits around the moon for several months to measure its gravity field. The mission also will answer longstanding questions about Earth's moon and provide scientists a better understanding of how Earth and other rocky planets in the solar system formed.
