This is Dave Downie, regarded by many as the next best bowler to Glyn Bosisto in Australia during the last 10 years.A Newcastle electrical engineer, Dave has won more than 50 club, district and State titles, including five NSW singles championships.Dave did not take up bowls until he was 40. Ex-Digger's luck out on Puffham -- Having his third race ride in nearly four years, jockey V, Thompson finished an unlucky third on Puffham in the Carlingford Welter Handicap at Rosehill yesterday. Thompson joined the AIF in 1942, when he was only an apprentice, and figured- in the New Guinea campaign.He returned to Sydney, secured his Army release about six months ago. and, although he has ridden constantly on the training tracks. he had only his third ride yesterday.Thompson said Puffham should have won as the gelding struck interference shortly after the start and had to cover extra ground throughout the race. Gabriel Poulain was a French champion cyclist. He made several attempts to achieve human-powered flight and in July 1921 won a prize of 10,000 francs awarded by Peugeot for a flight of ten metres at a height of one metre, on a bicycle with two wing planes in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.
