Design for memorial window. Artist: Frederick Wilson (American (born Ireland) Dublin 1858-1932 Los Angeles, California). Culture: American. Dimensions: 21 5/8 x 15 3/16 in. (55 x 38.6 cm). Maker: Tiffany Studios (1902-32). Date: 1917.The subtle blending of colors in this presentation drawing could be more or less duplicated in the multihued opalescent glass produced by Tiffany Studios. To fabricate this window, the watercolor drawing would have been translated into a full-scale cartoon. Next, a duplicate cartoon would have been made and then cut up into templates to guide the placement and color scheme of the individual pieces of glass in the window. As an example of how Wilson, and by extension Tiffany Studios, recycled certain motifs, the Christian soldier in the center is identical to a figure Wilson had used sixteen years earlier in a memorial window at the United States Naval Academy. Panel with an Angel Appearing to Joachim early 16th century French Until 1950 this panel lined the Great Hall of Highcliffe Castle in southern England. Constructed in the 1830s for Lord Stuart de Rothesay, the castle was furnished in part with stonework acquired form the ruined royal abbey at Jumièges in Normandy, where the panels might also have originated. In all likelihood they once decorated the backs of choir stalls ordered in 1501 by the abbot of Jumièges. Carved on The Cloisters' thirty-five oak panels are scenes from the lives of the Virgin and Christ, each set under an elaborate canopy of single or double arches. The exuberant latticework surrounding the arches provides an almost encyclopedic display of pinnacles, crockets, spirals and other fanciful decorations. The panels shown here open the narrative sequence, with the childless Joachim and Anne standing inside the Temple, saddened by the refusal of their offering.
