Grisaille Panel ca. 1265 French These grisaille panels are part of a set of eight once in three different chapels at the Norman residence of the French monarchs. They represent a mid-century transitional stage in royal French ateliers. The conventionalized acanthus buds are a continuation of earlier tastes, while the ivy leaves, delineated with hair-thin veins, reflect the newer, naturalizing tendencies. The castles in the border are devices of the kingdom of Castile and indicate royal patronage, probably that of Louis IX (1226-1272), who claimed the right to the Spanish throne through his mother, Blanche of Castile. Grisaille Panel ca. 1320-30 French The five panels assembled here come from at least four different lancets of the choir windows at Saint-Ouen at Rouen. They incorporate three different patterns of stylized leaves and tendrils, one with silver-stained blossoms, and three different strapwork designs in four combinations. All are known to have originated in this glazing program. The botanical theme is continued in the border pattern and in three of the central bosses or fermaillets. Roundel with the Temptation of Saint Anthony. Culture: German. Dimensions: Overall: 8 in. (20.3 cm). Date: 1532.Saint Anthony Abbot's test of faith at the hands of a clutch of demons is represented here in a charming, if somewhat naive, Late Gothic style. Dressed as an abbot, the saint holds a crosier, which terminates in a tau cross and a mendicant's bell; he is surrounded by fantastical beasts. The inscription suggests that the roundel was a donation by a local priest, who kneels before the saint next to his coat of arms.This roundel is stylistically consistent with other works known to have originated in southern Germany. The inscription names the village of Kappel and its priest in 1532. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
