ISS006-E-28028 (February 2003) --- The Southern Cross (left center), the Coal Sack Nebula (bottom left), and the Carina Nebula (upper right) are visible in this view photographed by astronaut Donald R. Pettit, Expedition Six NASA ISS science officer, on board the International Space Station (ISS). The Carina Nebula is a molecular cloud about 9000 light years from Earth where young stars are forming. The Coal Sack Nebula is an inky-black dust cloud about 2000 light years from Earth. Stars are probably condensing deep inside the Coal Sack, but their light has not yet broken through the cloud’s dense exterior. The Southern Cross, also known as The Crux, is a constellation familiar to southern hemisphere stargazers.

NASA image captured March 27, 2012NASA successfully launched five suborbital sounding rockets this morningfrom its Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia as part of a study of the upperlevel jet stream. The first rocket was launched at 4:58 a.m. EDT and eachsubsequent rocket was launched 80 seconds apart. Each rocket released achemical tracer that created milky, white clouds at the edge of space.Tracking the way the clouds move can help scientists understand the movementof the winds some 65 miles up in the sky, which in turn will help createbetter models of the electromagnetic regions of space that can damageman-made satellites and disrupt communications systems. The launches andclouds were reported to be seen from as far south as Wilmington, N.C.; westto Charlestown, W. Va.; and north to Buffalo, N.Y.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A beautiful sun rises on Floridas space coast as preparations are underway for mating the final solid rocket motor (SRM) to a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket at the Vertical Integration Facility at Space Launch Complex 41 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The Atlas V will carry NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission into space.MSL's components include a compact car-sized rover, Curiosity, which has 10 science instruments designed to search for evidence on whether Mars has had environments favorable to microbial life, including chemical ingredients for life. The unique rover will use a laser to look inside rocks and release its gasses so that the rovers spectrometer can analyze and send the data back to Earth. MSL is scheduled to launch Nov. 25 with a window extending to Dec. 18 and arrival at Mars Aug. 2012.

One of a short series of images showing the development of an aurora display from a classic arc into a more complex pattern of concentric arcs and with loops and swirls. This was Feb 5, 2019 from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. The outburst lasted only 5 minutes or so and might have been due to the Bz interplanetary field turning south briefly. After this series, the display faded and fractured into faint arcs and a diffuse glow across the sky. This is a single exposure with the 12mm Ro
