This marble statue, now in the courtyard in Rome of the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Capitoline Hill, is said to be one of the "talking statues" of Rome. People who wish to criticize the pope and or public figures would attach or leave their comments anonymously by these statues. This one is known as Marphurius or Marforio and was said to be a rival of another statue Pasquin. It actually dates to the first century A.D. and the Roman world. It was fashioned to represent a god. Many say it was the river god Tiber. Others say he represents the god Oceanus. Still others think he represents Jupiter, the king of gods.
