Small religious figurines, like this delicate group of the Virgin with a playful Christ Child on her lap, did not serve solely devotional purposes, but were also collectors objects in and of themselves. They were admired for their costly material and refined workmanship, and found their way into an art cabinet or Kunstkammer.

The grandeur and nobility of this figure, a rare example of Gothic wood sculpture from Italy, results from the careful balance of the elements of the bishop's vestments--the tall miter and the long elliptical drapery folds--with the attenuated proportions, the frontality of the pose, the authority of the facial expression, and the refinement in the painted surfaces, especially on the face and beard. Standing Bishop ca. 1510 Hans von Reutlingen German This finely worked figure appears to have come from the immense bust reliquary of Saint Lambert commissioned by the prince-bishop Erard de La Marck for the now-destroyed cathedral of Saint Lambert in Liège. Created by the Aachen goldsmith Hans von Reutlingen and his workshop beginning in 1508, it was consecrated on April 22, 1512. Saint Francis Xavier with an Angel Holding a Crucifix ca. 1720-25 Francesco Bertos Italian Cofounders of the Society of Jesus, Saints Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) and Francis Xavier (1506-1552) were canonized together in 1622. These two sculptures may well have been made to mark the hundredth anniversary of their canonization. Saint Ignatius is distinguished by his heartshaped face and the Latin motto of the society, AD MAIOREM DEI GLORIAM” (for the greater glory of God), displayed on the pages of the book held by the angel beside him. Saint Francis has a walking staff, sign of the peripatetic missionary, and parts his short cape, the mantellina, near his heart, an allusion to his frequent moments of mystical union with God. The two saints are conceived in a conservative spirit, retaining the long, slowly unwinding movements of late sixteenth-century Venetian sculpture, to which Francesco Bertos added brisk, shimmery tooling.
