She stares right in front of herself, holds a book on the left and in the judge the lost attribute, the sword. A wounded pearl band rests on the hair, which falls down in long wavy tresses, each ending in a curl. Over a thin undercreft with front and long wide, flared sleeves, a robe with short sleeves, on which frills, and a round, embroidered neck; It is included under the left arm, so that the right shoe point is released. The cloak, one of which hangs over the left arm, is held together by a double chain with decorative nodes on the chest. Around the neck a towered cord with pendant. Not only is she the mother of Jesus, here she is also the sedes sapientiae (seat of wisdom) - thus the throne on which is seated Christ, who represents divine wisdom. Within the genre of Indo-Portuguese ivories, popular subjects include Christ as the Good Shepard’ (the image of Christ as child would have related to similar bronze statuettes of the God Krishna) and the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception,’ which shows Mary atop a crescent moon, both of which remain ever-present icons in South Asia’s diverse religious landscape.

. The Virgin is represented as the Woman of the Apocalypse from the New Testament Book of Revelation. Standing on the crescent moon (the Jewish synagogue), she personifies the Christian Church. With the exception of the globe and the tips of the moon, this imposing figure has been carved from a single large piece of elephant tusk.

Standing Boddhisattva, 7th century, Unknown Japanese, 12 in. (30.48 cm), Gilt bronze, Japan, 7th century, Bodhisattvas are divine beings who deny their own passage into nirvana to help others achieve salvation. In its serene simplicity, this sculpture typifies an early style of Buddhist sculpture that flowered in Japan after Buddhist teachings were introduced between 500 and 600. The full oval face and childlike proportions are related to Chinese and Korean prototypes. Small gilt-bronze statues such as this were easily transportable, thus helping spread Buddhism and Buddhist images throughout Asia.

St Mary's Church in the Thuringian town of Mühlhausen is the second largest church building in the Free State of Thuringia after Erfurt Cathedral. It was mainly built during the 14th century in the Gothic style. Its 86.7 metre high central tower is the tallest in the state and is a major feature of the town's skyline. St Mary's Church has no longer been a parish church since 1975, but is used as a museum by the Mühlhausen Museums Association and as a place of worship for the Protestant parish of Mühlhausen. The Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist. These two statues originally stood underneath a large sculpture of the crucified Christ. The Virgin bows her head in sorrow, while the expressive gaze of the young apostle John, Jesuss favourite, is directed upwards to the right. Large sculpture groups such as this were normally placed high up on the screen that separated the chancel from the nave of the church.
