Three acrobats; page 67 from the 'Images of Spain' album (F) ca. 1812-20 Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish The elegance and freedom expressed in this drawing reveal Goyas mastery of depicting the human form in countless poses. He first laid down light chalk marks, barely visible, as a guide to positioning the figures. The three acrobats adopt distinct poses, each involving a drinking vessel. Drinking was a subject Goya explored repeatedly, usually to convey the danger or the effects of inebriation. In the present sheet, we cannot tell if the acrobats are imbibing alcohol or if the cups are merely part of their act.. Three acrobats; page 67 from the 'Images of Spain' album (F). Disparate: Otra Leyes per el Pueblo, c. 1820, Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, Spanish, 1746-1828, 9 5/8 × 14 in. (24.45 × 35.56 cm) (plate), Etching and aquatint, France, 19th century, Four men dressed as Moors cower in the corner before a massive elephant. One of the men holds up a book and extends a collar studded with bells in his other hand. This image is part of Goyas 'Disperates' or 'Proverbios,' dreamlike images that resist firm interpretation. One thought on this image is that the elephant represents the large and powerful public and that the Moors represent the elite who try to control the masses with their laws.
