Much of its history, including the derivation of its name, is unknown. It has many characteristics of the viol family such as a flat back, ribs that are flush with the top and back, and a rosette in addition to soundholes. Yet, like a violin, it is unfretted and held under the chin while played. Violas d'amore typically have seven playing strings, though instruments with other numbers of strings are not unusual. Perhaps the most distinguishable characteristic of the eighteenth-century viola d'amore is the presence of sympathetic strings, which are not played but located behind the bowed strings and vibrate "in sympathy." The sympathetic strings contribute to produce a tone that is clear and often described as "silvery," as well as creating a more resonant sound with a longer decay. Germany was the birthplace of many fine makers, including Jacob Stainer (b. Absam, 1617; d. Absam, 1683) and Joachim Tielke (b. Königsberg, 1641; d. Hamburg, 1719). The Hamburg workshop of Joachim Tielke produced a great variety of instruments (many were richly decorated with ivory, ebony, and tortoiseshell), including lutes, guitars, citterns, and violins. His violins typically have very delicate edgework and corners, pegboxes terminating in human or animal heads, and often bird's eye figured maple backs and sides. This violin retains its original neck, though it has been angled back and reshaped in conformance with modern playing requirements. The back and sides are of bird's-eye maple. The oldest written evidence for the early viola damore is a remark by the English diarist John Evelyn, who in 1679 called it a new instrument, strung with five metal strings and “sweet” in its sound. The early viola damore was not standardized in form or in number of strings and tuning. Three other instruments of the same festoon shape survive from Grancinos workshop, but each is a somewhat different size and has a different numbers of strings. The only instrument with its original neck has four strings, two others have five, andthis one has been restored with six strings. Grancino is often considered the most renowned maker of his generation outside Cremona.. Viola d'Amore. Italian. 1701. Spruce, maple, ebony, bone, iron. Milan, Italy.
