The instruments of Jacob Stainer and the Amati family influenced Forsters work, as can be seen in the outline, arching and delicate scroll of this ‘cello. The belly of the instrument is emblazoned with the royal coat of arms of Great Britain on the upper bout and the Prince of Wales' feathers on the lower bout. The ribs have been painted with the legend "Liberty and Loyalty" in heraldic lettering, repeated on each side. The instrument is with a fitted wooden coffin case, with brass fittings and a plaque engraved with the Prince of Wales' feathers. The case is similar to that of the Stradivari ‘Batta-Piatigorsky cello (L.2013.71a-g) and was probably made by Hill. The instrument became so popular with Welsh harpists, especially those residing in London, that by the eighteenth century it was known as the Welsh triple harp.’ The instrument has three rows of strings, with the two outside rows tuned in unison to a diatonic scale, and the middle row tuned to the chromatic notes. This instrument was made by John Richards of Llanrwst, also active in Glanbran, Wales’ leading harp maker of the eighteenth century. The harp was heavily used and shows signs of multiple restorations, several at the hands of important harp makers themselves. The earliest restoration was done by a craftsperson identified only as the successor to John Richards. An early nineteenth century renovation was performed by the eminent London harp maker Joseph Morley.. Welsh Triple Harp. British (Welsh). ca. 1750. The displayed instrument is the version with two independent windways for F and B-flat and has the modifications suggested in 1904 by the horn player Anton Horner, who introduced the double horn in the United States: a very wide bell with wired rim and string linkage of the valve action. This instrument represents the modern orchestral horn as used in most contries today. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #9312. The shape is somewhat reminiscenet of other stringed-instruments, such as viola da gambas and violas d'amore, that have festooned bodies. However, the effect with this instrument is like water rippling. It has been suggested such instruments were made for theatrical performances that required onstage instruments.
