(40.0 x 24.5 cm). Date: 1669-70.Confidently executed with sweeping strokes of black chalk expressively built up around the outlines, this portrait drawing of Pope Urban VIII Barberini (reigned 1623-1644), which appears to be an animated likeness done from life of the great maecenas of Baroque Rome, has been convincingly identified as the work of Pietro da Cortona's gifted pupil, Pietro Locatelli, relating to his design in reverse for the main figure seen at center in the tapestry cartoon of 1669-70 that represents the Union of the Duchy of Urbino and the Papal States (now in the Palazzo Venezia, Rome). The scale of this unusally large portrait drawing is life-size, and probably closely corresponds to that of the final work. The verso of the sheet represents the truncated design of a woman's arm also

Head of a Bearded Man. Artist: Domenichino (Domenico Zampieri) (Italian, Bologna 1581-1641 Naples). Dimensions: 13-3/8 x 9-9/16 in. (34.0 x 24.3 cm). Date: 1620-30.Domenichino trained at the Carracci Academy in Bologna and went on to a successful career as a leading painter in Rome and Naples. Draftsmanship based on close study of nature was the foundation of his artistic practice. This sheet, typical of his large heads studies, was perhaps preparatory for a figure in a painting, though it cannot be directly connected to any of his known works. Using black chalk with subtle white highlights, Domenichino conveys the slightly upturned eyes and serious expression of the figure, whose gravitas is reinforced by the flowing strokes defining his hair and beard.
