This image shows the initial ejecta that resulted when NASA's Deep Impact probe collided with comet Tempel 1 on July 3, 2005. It was taken by the spacecraft's high-resolution camera 13 seconds after impact.

Iapetus Thermal Radiation Image

AS15-98-13311 (31 July 1971) --- The solar corona, as photographed from the Apollo 15 spacecraft about one minute prior to sunrise on July 31, 1971, is seen just beyond the lunar horizon. The bright object on the opposite of the frame is the planet Mercury. The bright star near the frame center is Regulus, and the lesser stars form the head of the constellation Leo. Mercury is approximately 28 degrees from the center of the sun. The solar coronal streamers, therefore, appear to extend about eight degrees from the sun's center. This solar corona photograph was the second in a series of seven. Three such series were obtained by astronaut Alfred M. Worden, command module pilot, during the solo part of his lunar orbital flight. They represent man's first view of this part of the sun's light. While astronauts David R. Juno's Radiation Monitoring Investigation used the Stellar Reference Unit (SRU) star camera to collect this high resolution image of the dark side of Jupiter during Perijove 11 on Feb. 7, 2018. The clouds are illuminated by moonlight from Jupiter's moon Io and the two bright spots are flashes of Jovian lightning. Juno was 41,000 miles (66,000 kilometers) from the cloud tops when this SRU image was collected. This is the closest view of Jupiter's lightning from a visible light camera to date.

The two 'spots' in this image are a composite of two images of asteroid 2002 JF56 taken on June 11 and June 12, 2006, with the Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera component of the New Horizons Ralph imager.

This movie shows three views of the Martian moon Phobos as viewed in visible light by NASA's 2001 Mars Odyssey orbiter. The apparent motion is due to movement by Odyssey's infrared camera, Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS), rather than movement by the moon. Each of the three panels is a series of images taken on different dates (from top to bottom) Sept. 29, 2017; Feb. 15, 2018; and April 24, 2019. Deimos, Mars' other moon, can also be seen in the second panel. While displayed here in visible-wavelength light, THEMIS also recorded thermal-infrared imagery in the same scan. Movie available at

AS11-42-6179 (19 July 1969) --- This photograph of the solar corona was taken from the Apollo 11 spacecraft during trans-lunar coast and prior to lunar orbit insertion. The moon is the dark disc between the spacecraft and the sun.

NASA's Cassini casts powerful eyes on our home planet, and captures Earth, a pale blue orb, and a faint suggestion of our moon, among the glories of the Saturn system in this image taken Sept. 15, 2006.

On April 25, 2005 NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft obtained its first optical navigation (Op-Nav) image of comet Tempel 1. At the time the picture was taken the distance between spacecraft and comet was 64 million kilometers (39.7 million miles) away.

This frame from a movie made from radar images of asteroid 1999 JD6, obtained on July 25, 2015. The asteroid is approximately 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) on its long axis.

Range 16 million km (9.9 million miles) P-34616 This series of six Voyager 2 images of Neptune through different filters reveals altitude in Neptune's clouds. The top three images, taken though orange, violet, and ultraviolet filters by the narrow-angle camera, show several bright cloud features, clearly visible in each image. The 'scooter' cloud, at 42 degrees south latitude, although prominent in the orange image, is invisible in ultraviolet, where scattering by atmospheric molecules is strongest. The disappearance can be understood if the 'scooter cloud has more obscurring atmosphere above it ( i.e. the scooter cloud is lower ) than other bright clouds. The observation also suggest that the centrally located Great Dark Spot is also a low lying feature because it also loses visiblity in the ultraviolet image. The lower three wide angle images ( from left to right orange, weak methane 541nm, and strong methane 619nm are arranged in increasing absorption by methane in Neptune's atm

These images were taken of comet C/2013 A1 Siding Spring by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on Oct. 19, 2014, during the comet's close flyby of Mars and the spacecraft.

As part of a multi-mission campaign, NASA's Curiosity rover is observing Martian moon transits, the first of which involved the moon Phobos grazing the sun's disk.

This image from a movie clip shows Phobos, the larger of the two moons of Mars, passing in front of the other Martian moon, Deimos, on Aug. 1, from the perspective of NASA's Mars rover Curiosity.

Recent Cassini images of Saturn's moon Enceladus backlit by the sun show the fountain-like sources of the fine spray of material that towers over the south polar region. This image was acquired by NASA's Cassini spacecraft on Nov. 27, 2005.

The elongated asteroid in this radar image, named 2003 SD220, will safely fly past Earth on Dec. 24, 2015, at a distance of 6.8 million miles (11 million kilometers).

This frame from an animation shows five versions of observations that NASA's Curiosity made about one hour apart while Mercury was passing in front of the sun on June 3, 2014. Two sunspots, each about the diameter of Earth, also appear.

A Brilliant Plume

This image is a compilation of four images that were taken on June 13, 2005 by NASA's Deep Impact. The spacecraft is 18,675,137.9 kilometers (11,604,190 miles) away from comet Tempel 1.

Scientists using two giant, Earth-based radio telescopes bounced radar signals off passing asteroid 2011 UW158 to create images for an animation showing the rocky body's fast rotation. This is a frame from the animation.

This set of images from NASA's Cassini spacecraft shows Saturn's moon Titan glowing in the dark. Titan was behind Saturn at the time, in eclipse from the sun.

As it sped away from a relatively distant encounter with Titan on Feb. 17, 2017, NASA's Cassini spacecraft captured this mosaic view of the moon's northern lakes and seas.

This composite of 30 images of asteroid 2014 JO25 was generated with radar data collected using NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar in California's Mojave Desert.

This sequence of radar images of asteroid 2013 ET was obtained on Mar. 10, 2013, by NASA scientists using the 230-foot (70-meter) DSN antenna at Goldstone, CA, when the asteroid was about 693,000 mi (1.1 million km) from Earth.

Range 280,000 km. ( 170,000 miles ) P-34726 BW Two 10 minute exposures of Neptune's rings clearly show the two main rings , as well as the inner faint ring and the faint band that extends planetward from roughly halfway between the two bright rings. Both bright rings have material throughout their entire orbit, and are therefore continuous. The inner ring and the broad band are much fainter than the two narrow main rings. These images were taken 1 hour and 27 minutes aprt, using the clear filter on Voyager 2's wide angle camera. These long exposures images were taken while the rings were backlit by the sun. This viewing geometry enhances the visibility of dust and allows optically thinner parts of the rings to be seen. The bright glare in the center is due to overexposure of the crescent of Neptune . The two gaps in the upper part of the outer ring in the image on the left are due to the removal of blemishes during computer processing of the images. Numerous bright stars are evident in

The oblate shape of the moon Iapetus is particularly noticeable in this portrait; the two-toned surface of the moon Iapetus also stands out against the darkness of space in this image taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft.

Spirit on Husband

Range 12 million km (7.5 million miles) Resolution 110 km (68 miles) per pixel. These 2 images of Neptune were taken by Voyager 2's narrow-angle camera. During the 17.6 hours between the left and right images, the Great Dark Spot, at 22 degrees south latitude (left of center), has completed a little less than one rotation of Neptune. The smaller dark spot, at 54 south, completed a little more than one rotation, as can be seen by comparing its relative positions in the two pictures. The Great Dark Spot and the smaller spot have a relative velocity of 100 meters per second (220 miles an hour). The light and dark bands circling Neptune indicate predominantly zonal (east-west) motion. The diffuse white feature north of the Great Dark Spot is near Neptune's equator, and rotates with about the same period as the Great Dark Spot. Streak of bright clouds at the south edge, and just east of the Great Dark Spot, are its constatnt companions, and change the details of their appearance, often with

This image shows the view from NASA's Deep Impact's probe 30 minutes before it was pummeled by comet Tempel 1. The picture's brightness has been enhanced to show the jets of dust streaming away from the comet.

The bright cirrus-like clouds of Neptune change rapidly, often forming and dissipating over periods of several to tens of hours. In this sequence NASA's Voyager 2 observed cloud evolution in the region around the Great Dark Spot (GDS).

This global map of Saturn's moon Mimas was created using images taken during Cassini spacecraft flybys. The moon's large, distinguishing crater, Herschel, is seen on the map at left. The map is an equidistant (simple cylindrical) projection and has a scale of 710 feet (216 meters) per pixel at the equator. The mean radius of Mimas used for projection of this map is 123.2 miles (198.2 kilometers). The resolution of the map is 16 pixels per degree. The update includes new images for almost half of the moon's surface, with new images from two close flybys, in Nov. 2016 and Feb. 2017. The moon's western hemisphere, south pole and parts of the eastern hemisphere received updates in this version.

Jupiter's atmospheric circulation is dominated by alternating eastward and westward jets from equatorial to polar latitudes. This image was taken on April 3, 1997, by NASA's Galileo spacecraft.

These are enhanced versions of four views of the planet Venus taken by NASA's Galileo's Solid State Imaging System at distances ranging from 1.4 to 2 million miles as the spacecraft receded from Venus.

This single frame from a sequence of six images of an animation shows sunspots as viewed by NASA's Curiosity Mars rover from April 4 to April 15, 2015. From Mars, the rover was in position to see the opposite side of the sun.

Colorful Cratered Calypso

This image is the first observation of shallow lightning flashes signatures of high-altitude Jovian thunderstorms that may fundamentally influence the composition of Jupiter's atmosphere. The image of was acquired by NASA's Juno mission using the spacecraft's sensitive Stellar Reference Unit navigation camera during Juno's 10th science flyby on Feb. 7, 2018. The solar-powered Jupiter explorer launched on Aug. 5, 2011 and went into orbit around the gas giant on July 4, 2016.

These images were taken every five minutes by MESSENGER as the spacecraft departed Mercury after completing its second flyby on October 6, 2008. A portion of the same sequence, totaling 198 images in all, has also been made into a movie.

This image of the Earth is one of 60 frames taken by NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft on Feb. 14, 1990 from a distance of approximately 4 billion miles and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic plane.
