Blood Drying Unit- Processing Blood in the Laboratory, Cambridge, England, UK, 1943 A worker at the blood drying unit at Cambridge University passes crude plasma through a filter of paper pulp to clarify it. The worker is wearing a special mask made from wire, rubber and plastic. The wire forms arms, like a pair of glasses, which hook over the wearer's ears. It passes over the bridge of the nose, (the wire has a rubber coating at this point) and then hooks through a transparent plastic bag which is suspended from the wire over the wearer's face, covering the mouth. The wire forms a rigid rim to the plastic bag, keeping it slightly open, probably to catch any droplets of moisture from the wearer's nose.
