Godfrey de Bouillon (c. 10581100) was the duke of Lower Lorraine, leader of the First Crusade, and elected king of Jerusalem, which he helped capture, but took the title of 'protector of the holy Sepulchre.' His brother Baldwin succeeded him. Seen here is his entry into Jerusalem in 1099. Karl Theodorvon Piloty(1826 1886) was a German painter, noted for his historical subjects, and recognized as the foremost representative of the realistic school in Germany.

In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale Marie Barnet, the daughter of a very poor woodcutter who could not feed his family and so gave his daughter to the Virgin Mary when she asked for her. Mary gave Marie instructions which she did not follow. Yet every time Mary asked her she continued to lie. A king had fallen in love with Marie. After Mary tok her children because she would not admit her lie, the people of the kingdom revolsed to burn her at the stake, as shown here. Marie did then admit to the lie and rain quenched the flames. This image is from Grimms Eventyr (Grimm's Fairy Tales) by Carl Ewald, published in 1922. The frontispiece has the illustrations by Philip Grot Johann and R. Leinweber. Johann was a well-known German illustrator and did pieces for Goethe, but he considered his pieces for Grimm's tales very important. He died young and Leinweber succeeded h

The Peasants' Revolt of 1381 in England began in Brentwood, Essex as a protest at the collection of poll tax and reached a climax at Smithfield, London. Richard II (1367-1800) met the Kentish peasants who, under Watt Tyler (d1381), were demanding the end of serfdom. During the meeting William Walworth (d1385) Lord Mayor of London, wounded Wat Tyler who was taken to St Bartholomew's Hospital but was later dragged out of the hospital and beheaded.
