The Unicorn is Attacked (from the Unicorn Tapestries). Culture: South Netherlandish. Dimensions: Overall: 145 x 168in. (368.3 x 426.7cm). Date: 1495-1505.According to tradition, the unicorn cannot be disturbed while performing a magical act. The attack by the hunters thus presumably begins soon after the action depicted in The Unicorn Is Found, and the scene is one filled with chaos and commotion. The ferocity of the battle is conveyed by the converging lances aimed at the animal, the sounding of the hunting horns, and the menacing hounds. Already wounded on his back, the unicorn leaps across a stream in a desperate attempt to escape his encircling enemies.The use of hounds to scout, chase, and eventually attack the quarry was typical practice in medieval stag hunts, and the palatial buildings in the background might be a further allusion to the hunt as a royal or aristocratic pastime. The Unicorn is Found (from the Unicorn Tapestries). Culture: South Netherlandish. Dimensions: Overall: 145 x 149in. (368.3 x 378.5cm). Date: 1495-1505.In this tapestry the unicorn kneels before a tall white fountain that has a pair of pheasants and a pair of goldfinches perched on its edge. Other animals both exotic and native to Europe lounge about, while twelve hunters in the back of the scene discuss the discovery of their quarry. Flora and fauna play a significant role in the narratives of the Unicorn Tapestries. Plants prescribed in medieval herbals as antidotes to poisoning, such as sage, pot marigolds, and orange, are positioned near the stream, which is being purified by the unicorn's magic horn. Abundantia, from The Four Continents and Related Allegories Made 1670-1710 Brussels. In this tapestry, part of a Four Continents and Related Allegories set, Abundantia, a female personification of abundance, sits on a horn of plenty overflowing with fruit, surrounded by three female attendants, each representing a continent. The kneeling woman crowned with a circlet of blossoms, offering a basket of flowers and fruit, personifies Asia. The dark-skinned woman bearing a horn of plenty full of sheaves of grain represents Africa. The third attendant, who wears a feathered headdress and displays gold, silver, and pearls, can be identified as America. The attributes of all four figures are based on Cesare Ripaís Iconologia (1593), and their depiction exemplifies the early style of their designer, Lodewijck van Schoor they have elongated bodies, small heads, long noses, and broad arms and legs, and though they gesture dramatically, their poses are formulae repeated throughout the set.. . Fragment of a tapestry representative May and June, belonging to a series of ten with the months, elements, seasons, day and night. The series was manufactured by Aartshertog Leopold Wilhelm, Stadtholder der Zuidelijke Nederlanden. On this fragment a winged woman is accompanied by the zodiac sign of twins and represents the month of May. Five other tapestries from the collection also belong to this series (inv.no. BK 15310 A-D and BK 1959-65)

Four Seasons: Winter: Skating Scene, designed c. 1535, woven mid- to late 1600s. Possibly by Gobelins Manufactory (France, Paris, est. 1662). Wool, silk, and gold filé: tapestry weave; overall: 244 x 388 cm (96 1/16 x 152 3/4 in.). People of all classes and ages enjoyed ice skating, a winter pastime popularized in the Netherlands. Here, some couples are already skating and slipping on the ice, while others tie on their skates or huddle around braziers (portable coal heaters) to keep warm. One affectionate couple in the foreground hold hands as they walk. A castle on the far edge of the frozen lake occupies the background. In the left distance, several small figures holding ladders and long hooks run toward a building that has caught on fire, a frequent occurrence in the winter when wooden houses were heated by fireplaces.

The Fall of Troy; Helen Takes Refuge in the Sanctuary of Vesta; Venus Counsels Aeneas; Juno Encourages the Greeks (Aeneid, Book II) ca. 1530-35 Master of the Aeneid European of the Renaissance period viewed ancient Rome not only as the origin of Italian civilzation but also the geographic center of a lost golden age. This plaque belongs to a series of at least eighty Limoges enamels illustrating events from Virgils Aeneid. The Latin epic poem tells the story of the legendary hero Aeneas, who escaped the sack and burning of Troy by the Greeks and, after wandering for some time, settled in Italy, where his descendants founded Rome.The scenes are not, however, the product of the enameler's imagination; rather, they are close copies of the woodcut illustrations for the edition of the Latin poets Opera printed by Johann Grüninger in Strasbourg in 1502. The same woodcuts were used again for the edition published in Lyon in 1517. The anonymous painter of the enamels may have used either the

The prince of England is depicted as a wildman, and the princess of France meets a miller who offers her refuge. The middle high German inscription alludes to the princess seeking refuge, whereupon the man replies: "Willingly, though as a poor man I can offer you nothing." It takes its name from the feast day of Saint Elisabeth of Hungary which was formerly November 19.
