Neptune from the "Doria Grotesques" designed 1545, woven ca. 1550 Designed by Perino del Vaga (Pietro Buonaccorsi) Italian Like a classical statue come to life, Neptune, god of the seas, stands with his trident and a dolphin atop a pedestal amid curling plant tendrils, gamboling animals and putti, and elegant swags of drapery. In the cartouche above, Minerva receives a victory palm. This is the only intact version of Neptune from the thrice-woven series of tapestries called the Doria Grotesques. Perino del Vaga designed the eight-piece sequence in about 1545 for the naval commander Andrea Doria to add to the substantial tapestry collection in his glorious palazzo in Fassolo, then just outside the port city of Genoa. The Grotesques, each featuring a different deity, showcase Perino's dexterity in this decorative field, combining respect for antique prototypes with Raphael-inspired Renaissance grace. Diana and her Nymphs before 1662 After a painting by Laurent de La Hyre French This tapestry depicts the goddess Diana bathing with her nymphs after the hunt (in classical legend, Diana was the goddess of the hunt). The scene takes place before the ruins of a classical temple, beyond which an idealized landscape stretches into the distance. The elaborate borders feature a frieze populated by classical deities between cartouches depicting the signs of the zodiac. The floral cartouches in the corners surround images of a phoenix, a bird of paradise, a dolphin, and a lion. The tapestry was one of at least six depicting scenes from classical mythology, after paintings by Laurent de la Hyre (the original painting for this scene is now in the J. Here, a dog handler runs with a hound known as a limer, trained to pick up the scent of game so the pack could be set on its trail. The limer typically was kept leashed (its name comes from lyam, an archaic English term for leash) and did not run with the pack.

. Tapestry with loot with booty. Links a group of four people: three women, resp. Dressed in yellow, blue and floral red and a man in red dress. In the middle is a hunter, with a heron hanging; Furthermore, a spring horse with a man who steps out of the stirrup, followed by an apple fungus with Amazon, coming from a high hill. On the right, and surrounded by dogs, lie on and over each other a boar, a deer, hares and birds, which a group of three people bends over: between two women, in blue and red, a man beats his arms around both. A hunting lodge in the distance. The scene takes place in a forest landscape with a view in the middle and with high trees on the sides, while the foreground is filled with large-breeding flowering plants, O.A. Roos, blackberry, chamomile, iris, some of which repeat. See left a fleshy leaf plant. The tapestry is part of the "English yachts" series.

Hunting of Birds with a Hawk and a Bow (from the Hunting Parks Tapestries) ca. 1515-35 South Netherlandish This tapestry, with its rich colors, is packed with incidental details of animals, hunters, and shepherds. From a larger set of scenes that unfold within a hunting park, the main subject of this tapestry is bird hunting. Inside the enclosure, an archer aims for a bird perched high in a fruit tree. His companion to the left swings a lure above his head to retrieve the hawk that soars above the central tree. On the other side of the tree, a heron struggles in the clutches of a second hawk. A hunter uses a staff to vault the stream, his dog already ahead of him. A nearby shepherd has climbed the fence to watch the action.. Date: ca. 1791.This sampler is in a slightly later style associated with Miss Balch's school. The formal archway in Mary Munro's sampler has been replaced by a gently meandering border (1984.331.12). Both girls used the motto that encourages young women to adorn their minds. Rebekah's verse goes on to say that a young woman should divide her time between reading, sewing, and writing, an indication that by the end of the eighteenth century, some families considered intellectual pursuits as important as sewing. Chimney piece with images of Adam and Eve ca. 1760 Unknown Eighteenth-century embroideries wider than they are tall, like this one, were called "chimneypieces" because they were meant to be hung above a parlor mantel, a place of honor. The prominent display of this type of schoolgirl needlework signaled that the young lady of the home had been well educated and was ready to become an accomplished wife. The designs found on chimneypieces were usually derived from European print sources; in this case, scenes from the story of Adam and Eve were adapted from prints of paintings in the renowned collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria.
