Models of Paper Folding (Origata tehon) 1697 Japan Since ancient times in Japan, decorative wrapping paper was a part of formal gift-exchange rituals, and knowledge of the art of paper folding (origata) was an essential skill of aristocrats and highranking warriors. The origins of origata can be traced to the Heian period (794-1185), when several styles of wrapping were developed, including that for poetry, money, and fans. With time several schools of paper wrapping were formed, including, most prominently, the Ogasawara School. Techniques were taught exclusively through oral transmission. By the Edo period, origata became prominent even among commoners. Origami, the art of paper folding so popular today, evolved from origata. This scrapbook album is accompanied by several loose samples for calligraphy items. According to the inscriptions, this set of models served as the initiation into the art of origata for Kikuchi Fujiwara no Takehide by an Ogasawara master, and is dated the third

Replica of the Merneptah Stele (Israel Stele or the Victory Stele), of Merneptah, (reign: 1213 to 1203 BC). Discovered by Flinders Petrie in 1896 at Thebes, and now housed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The text is largely an account of Merneptah's victory over the Libyans and their allies, but the last 3 of the 28 lines deal with a separate campaign in Canaan, then part of Egypt's imperial possessions. The stele is sometimes referred to as the "Israel Stela" because a majority of scholars translate a set of hieroglyphs in line 27 as "Israel." The stela represents the earliest textual reference to Israel and the only reference from ancient Egypt.

Textile with Kufic Inscription. Dimensions: Textile: L. 15 in. (38.1 cm)W. 23 7/8in. (60.6cm)Mount: L. 20 in. (50.8 cm) W. 20 1/4 in. (51.4 cm)D. 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm). Date: 946-74.Egypt was home to a number of state-run textile factories sponsored by the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad until about 969. These factories produced a cloth known as tiraz--a term that came to refer both to garments with inscriptions and to the workshops that manufactured them. This textile was woven for the Abbasid caliph al-Muti', whose rule in Baghdad (946-74) coincided with the Buyid conquest of the city. The monumental scale of the calligraphy and its location near the edge of this fragment indicate that it originally belonged to a large textile, perhaps a shawl. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Manuscript of the Qur'an Manuscript of the Qur'an, A.H. 889/1484 C.E. Ink, opaque watercolors, and gold on paper, Paper: 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 in. (9.5 x 9.5 cm). The patron who commissioned this manuscript of the Quran spared no expense—from the first few folios, replete with lush illumination, to the binding, elaborately engraved with the Chinese-inspired lotus blossoms and cloud bands common to the art of the Timurid dynasty in Iran and Central Asia. The second and third pages displayed here feature intricate vegetal ornamentation in gold on a background of cobalt blue, both materials prized for their value and beauty. The right-hand page contains the Arabic text of the Qurans first sura, or chapter, which plays a part in many Muslims daily lives; the following chapter begins on the left. The script is known as ghubar, which literally means “dust,” because the letters were thought to be as minute as grains of powder. The small overall size of the codex suggests that it was meant for tr

The Lotus Sutra in Seven Volumes, 16th century, 6 1/4 x 14 3/8 x 9 3/8 in. (15.88 x 36.51 x 23.81 cm) (box, closed), Gold pigment on indigo dyed paper, China, 16th century, The Lotus Sutra (Saddharmapundarika: The Lotus of the True Doctrine) was among the earlier texts to reach China from India and it became extremely popular with most Far Eastern Buddhists. Like other canonical works, this sutra was ascribed to a Buddha or an immediate disciple with no trace of actual authorship. It is reasonable to assume however that monks wrote nearly all the canonical works. Paying particular attention to Avalokitesvara (Chinese: Guanyin), the Lotus Sutra is basically a restatement of the way and practice of a bodhisattva. Lavishly ornamented, the seven volumes are bound in their original silk brocade and written in gold on deep blue indigo dyed paper. The calligraphy is beautifully executed in well-balanced kaishu script, and the illuminated frontispiece and end piece are meticulously painted wit

Fragments of Rhind Mathematical Papyrus Fragments of Rhind Mathematical Papyrus, ca. 1493-1481 B.C.E. Papyrus, ink, Largest Fragment: 6 5/16 x 3 3/8 in. (16 x 8.5 cm). This papyrus was most likely a mathematical reference textbook for the use of scribes. These fragments became separated from the main papyrus when the roll was broken into two parts, probably at the time of its discovery in the mid-nineteenth century. The fragments seen in the upper register, and those few on the right, are from the end of a section that dealt with the simplification of fractions. The fragments in the five lower registers on the left come from the beginning of the section that demonstrated the equitable division of one, two, six, seven, eight, and nine loaves of bread among ten men. It was built for pharaoh Unas, the ninth and final king of the Fifth Dynasty in the mid 24th century BC. the pyramid of Unas is the first to have texts on the walls of its burial chambers. The spells of these Pyramid Texts were thought to be useful to the dead king in the afterlife; some were recited during his burial ceremonies. The hieroglyphs in Unas' pyramid are incised in fine sunk relief and painted blue, while the ceiling of the sarcophagus chamber is covered with stars
