Pinto Collection - Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.. Richly carved boxwood combs were given as expensive love tokens in medieval times. The carver chose boxwood because it was the only wood with a sufficiently straight and dense grain to allow him to carve such fine teeth without splitting. He cut the teeth using a double-bladed saw called a stadda. A skilled craftsman with a steady hand could usually cut up to fifty teeth per inch.Strip -Hat with Pin, early 1900s. Culture: Russian. Date: first quarter 18th century. This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg. This rare and expensive luxury accessory depicts the traditional goddess or tree of life motif. Depictions of the goddess are common in RussiReticulin. End XIXth. The narrative is continuous over the whole of the bag and is unified by the body of water and the bridge. A notable detail in this pastoral scene is the figure of the shepherd carrying what appears to be an injured lamb suspended from a pole. Margaret S. Bedell (1861-1932) donated, by gift or bequest, over 500 objects to the Brooklyn Museum, including furniture, quilts, samplers, costume and Native American beadwork. Her collection of American and European beaded bags includes examples from Philadelphia and the Catskill Mountain region of New York State, as well as Italy, Austria, Germany, and Holland.. This shaffron is by far the most elaborately decorated of any recorded up to this point. The quality and execution of its lavish gold and silver damascening rank among the best examples of Tibetan decorated ironwork of this kind, suggesting that it was made for a very high ranking general, if not a king. A carbon-14 test of one of its leather laces resulted in a date range of 1450-1650, coinciding almost exactly with the period of the last two secular Tibetan monarchies: the Rinpung (1435-1565) and the Kings of Tsang (1566-1641).. (35.56 x 27.94 x 2.54 cm), Porcupine quills, hide, beads, tin, feathers, United States, 19th-20th century, The Lakota had a complex system of societies that were associated with animals, sacred power, and battle exploits. Members of the Elk Dreamer's Society had to have a vision involving elk in order to be a member. Participants usually wore and used items with elk imagery, like this pouch. During their ceremonies, some members wore masks that symbolized elk and carried a decorated hoop. Middle Kingdom The so-called paddle doll consists of a flat piece of wood depicting the torso, rudimentary arms and neck of a woman, with a thick shock of "hair" made of beads strung on linen thread. The body is often painted with jewelry, textile patterns and/or tattoos. Contrary to their modern name, these "dolls" were not toys. The key-hole shape of the body is similar to the counterpoise of the menat necklaces that were used as percussion instruments during religious ceremonies (see 11.215.450). When shaken, the beads of the menat necklace would have made a sound intended to appease a god or goddess. The paddle dolls, with their beaded hair, may have served the same purpose. It has been suggested that paddle dolls were an accoutrement of troops of singers and dancers who performed at religious ceremonies associated with the goddess Hathor.. (1603 - 1868)Coin purse 1830-50 American The construction of this coin purse is unusual; 19th-century coin purses were more often crocheted rather than knitted. The maker's name worked in beads and what is likely the owner's name on the frame offer a good document of Victorian craft making. The bag, which belonged to the donor's family, was probably created by a woman for a male friend.Margaret S.
