Red and White Peach Blossoms 1843 Tsubaki Chinzan Japanese This pair of scrolls (with 1975.268.116) provides a unique insight into the studio process of a painter working in the later phase of the Nanga tradition. The scroll on the right is a shita-e, or preparatory sketch, for the completed work on the left. Tsubaki Chinzan constructed the composition using a collage method: the branches on the upper left, for example, appear to have been painted on a separate sheet, which the artist then pasted into the preliminary version. Chinzan then copied this composition onto the final scroll, using lighter brushstrokes and deleting all pentimenti. Unfortunately, Chinzan lost some of the verve of the studys spiky draftsmanship when he made the transfer to the final work.. Red and White Peach Blossoms 49007

Rank Badge with Qilin. Culture: China. Dimensions: Overall: 13 1/2 x 13 1/2 in. (34.3 x 34.3 cm). Date: 16th-early 17th century.The unusual animal on this rank badge is an alternative representation of the qilin, an auspicious mythological beast that is said to appear in the reign of a virtuous ruler. In the Ming dynasty, qilin badges were worn as the insignia of nobles.The qilin seen here is similar to one on a badge excavated from the tomb of Duke Xu Fu, who died in 1517. The animal in Xu Fu's badge has a slightly longer neck, but its coat has a similar hexagonal pattern. That pattern is also found on a painted giraffe exhibited nearby. A gift of this exotic beast to the Yongle emperor in 1414 occasioned many flattering comments among senior officials that a qilin had appeared, implying that the Yongle emperor, a usurper, was the rightful ruler. This occurrence must have been the beginning of the conflation of giraffe and qilin. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Panel with five phoenixes in a garden 18th century China Large pictorial silk tapestries such as this one were mostly woven in the imperial workshops in Suzhou, a textile center in southeast China. The bright yellow background, a color exclusive to the emperor, further confirms its imperial origins. The five phoenixes probably refer to the five species of this auspicious bird in Chinese myths. This piece is paired with another five-phoenix panel in The Met collection, and the set could represent the five ideal relationships (wulun) in Confucianism: between father and son, husband and wife, emperor and official, senior and youth, and among friends.. Over Robe (Uchikake) with Long-Tailed Birds in a Landscape second half of the 18th century Japan Birds with long tails inhabit a bright landscape of waterfalls, rocks, pine trees, and cherry blossoms. Resembling auspicious motifs frequently used in China, the birds have the vivid color of pheasants and the ribbon-like tails of magpies, yet the dominance of cherry blossoms firmly places the scene in Japan. The inherent qualities of the materials, such as the lustrous white satin damask ground, and techniques, such as the long floating satin stitch embroidery, used on this uchikake increase the reflection of light and lend great radiance to the auspicious landscape. Most brilliant of all is the gold thread applied with a couching technique for the waterfalls and forceful current. In the couching technique, shiny metallic threads are laid on the surface of the fabric and stitched into place, permitting the reflection of light along the unbroken length of the waterfall..
