Because papyrus was a costly material, it was normally reserved for important documents such as administrative records and funerary literature. For the same reason, talented artists usually drew the illustrations. This crudely drawn parade of important Egyptian deities is therefore quite surprising. Vertical Panels with Cherry Spray designed 1758-67, woven 1764-71 General conception by Jacques Germain Soufflot The Tapestry Room from Croome Court, Worcestershire, the seat of the Earls of Coventry, was begun in 1763 and finished in 1771. The sixth Earl of Coventry (1722-1809) commissioned these tapestries for Croome Court from Jacques Neilson's workshop at the Royal Gobelins Manufactory in Paris in August 1763. Portraying scenes from classical myths symbolizing the elements, the medallions are based on designs by François Boucher. The set was delivered and in place by June 1771. The group was the first using this design to be woven with a crimson background and it may have been the first made specifically to extend around four walls of a room without architectural frames.. Linen marks from the wrappings of Henhenet's mummy ca. 2051-2030 B.C. Middle Kingdom Linen marks are usually short inscriptions written in ink on the corners of large sheets of linen. Some mention the names and titles of high officials to whose estate the linen may have belonged or who may have been overseeing its acquisition or production. Other marks say nfr (good), which probably refers to the quality of the fabric. Occasionally, the name of the ruling king and a date are also written. This linen mark is one of five from the wrappings of Henhenet's mummy (see 07.230.1c*). One of six high-ranking royal females buried in shaft tombs under the platform of the mortuary temple of Mentuhotep II, Henhenet would have been provided with linen of the finest quality. Her mummy was unwrapped in 1923, and only these marks preserved from the bandages. The mummy itself was sent to Qasr el-Aini Hospital in Cairo, where it was examined by Dr. Douglas Derry. Dr. Derry concluded that the queen had died

Stencil with Continuous Fret Pattern (sayagata) 19th century Japan This stencil's continuous fret pattern originated in china, but in the Edo period it became extremely common in Japanese dress. Many silk kosode robes from the 17th through 19th centuries were made of dyed and embroidered rinzu, a lightweight figured satin typically patterned with tiny flowers on a sayagata background. Cargo lists of the early Edo period reveal that large amounts of rinzu were imported to Japan from China.. Stencil with Continuous Fret Pattern (sayagata) 65305

The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus, October 4, 651 B.C.E. Papyrus, pigment, ink, Overall: 10 15/16 × 210 5/16 in. (27.8 × 534.2 cm). The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus records the petition of a man named Pemou on behalf of his father, Harsiese. Harsiese was an ordinary priest in the service of the god Amun-Re at Karnak, but he wished to leave that god's service and join the priesthood of the neighboring temple of Montu-Re-Horakhty. Because temple personnel were seen as the property of the divinity, the god had to be consulted about any change in staff. Pemou asked for the god's advice on behalf of his father, and the god responded favorably. To record the verdict, Pemou had this papyrus drawn up and decorated. The papyrus shows the procession of a image of Amun-Re, the fragments of whose shrine can be seen above the carrying poles borne by the priests. Above the shrine appear two ostrich-feather fans shading the god from the sun. In front of the priestly file stand the h

Portrait of Mlle Fiocre in the Ballet "La Source" (Portrait de Mlle...Eugénie Fiocre: à propos du ballet "La Source") Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917). Portrait of Mlle Fiocre in the Ballet "La Source" (Portrait de Mlle...Eugénie Fiocre: à propos du ballet "La Source"), ca. 1867-1868. Oil on canvas, 51 1/2 x 57 1/8 in., 166 lb. (130.8 x 145.1 cm, 75.3kg). The first of Edgar Degas’s many works to focus on the ballet, this painting depicts Eugénie Fiocre, a celebrated ballerina, in her role as princess Nourreda in the ballet La Source. The production presented a fantasy of an exotic “Orient,” featuring Mlle Fiocre as (in the words of one writer) “the prettiest blonde houri who ever wore the bonnet and the corset of pearls in the paradise of Muhammad.” The 1866 production at the Paris Opéra—with its elaborate costumes and sets, including the hydraulic-powered running stream and live horse seen in Degas’s painting—astonished audiences and provided fodder for caricaturists, who comp
