Chasuble Fragment with Realistic Animals, c. 1420. Italy. Silk, gold thread; lampas weave; overall: 115.6 x 33.7 cm (45 1/2 x 13 1/4 in.); mounted: 120.7 x 36.8 cm (47 1/2 x 14 1/2 in.). Around 1400 an emerging interest in the bucolic world of nature encouraged a new trend among textile designers, as seen in the lions, hawks, dogs, and ducks on this luxury silk fragment. The continual influence of Chinese asymmetry, however, is evident in the prominent undulating palmette trees, enlarged from sinuous vines frequently seen in Italian silks and velvets from this period.

Date: 1100-1400.Textiles' relatively light weight enabled them to be moved easily throughout the Andean region, resulting in much shared imagery across the central and north coasts of Peru in the period leading up to the Inca Empire. The motifs on this panel, associated with the Chancay culture, the southern neighbors of the Chimú, are closely related to the rich maritime imagery that features prominently in the architectural ornament and textile designs associated with Chan Chan. Fragment with musicians, 1200s. Spain, probably Almeria. Silk and gold thread: lampas weave with areas of double cloth; overall: 16.8 x 14 cm (6 5/8 x 5 1/2 in.); mounted: 27.3 x 24.1 cm (10 3/4 x 9 1/2 in.). The repeating pattern features female musicians playing tambourines. They wear long blue and blue-green robes in alternate rows. A lamp hangs between them, suggesting an evening setting. Traces of their black hair peek out from under red headdresses. This textile, along with several other fragments, was found within the pages of a Christian manuscript in the Cathedral of Vich, near Barcelona in northeastern Spain.

Furniture plaque: incised waterbirds ca. 18th century B.C. Old Assyrian Trading Colony This piece belongs to a group of five carved ivory plaques probably found at the site of a palace at Acemhöyük in central Anatolia. Originally, they formed the composition of a falcon with outstretched wings grasping antelopes in its extended talons. The central plaque forms the head and body of the bird, finely carved to indicate the swelling of the breast, the stylized peregrine falcon cheek markings, and the large eyes with holes for inlaid pupils, now missing. Traces of gilding survive on the eyes and beak. The plaque is discolored with a combination of reddish areas, where iron oxides are present on the surface, and a gray hue that indicates the object was exposed to considerable heat, perhaps during the destruction of the palace. Scans of the surface revealed traces of silver in the more intensely red areas, although it cannot be determined whether this is due to a metal overlay that is no long

Woman's wrapper (àdìrẹ ẹlé̩kọ) Yorùbá , unknown maker's mark. Woman's wrapper (àdìrẹ ẹlé̩kọ), 20th century. Commercial cotton cloth, synthetic indigo dye, 68 5/8 × 78 × 1/16 in. (174.3 × 198.1 × 0.1 cm). Àdìrẹ is a Yorùbá textile whose patterns are made through resist dyeing. The àdìrẹ technique used to make this wrapper is àdìrẹ ẹlé̩kọ, wherein female artists paint cassava flour paste on fabric, preventing certain areas from soaking in blue indigo dye. This cloths name is Olókun, identifiable in part by the motif of a circular “stool” surrounded by “leaves.” As goddess of the sea, Olókuns domain is the source of wealth, lending the cloth the associated meaning “life is sweet.” Other àdìrẹ employ tie-and-dye techniques (àdìrẹ oníko), where raffia ties hold small stones or seeds in place to cover areas of the fabric during dyeing, resulting in àdìrẹ eléso patterns. One such àdìrẹ oníko was incorporated underneath a panel in the featured egúngún (see photograph). Arts of Africa 20th c

The motif on this fragment of textile, which may be from Iran or Uzbekistan, featuring two bulls in a beaded medallion, is clearly indebted to Sasanian and Sogdian design traditions of the early Silk Road. The bulls stand on a winged palmette, now almost worn away, with a stylized plant between them. The group to which this woven textile belongs has been ascribed on the basis of an inscription on a similar textile to the Central Asian city of Bukhara in present day Uzbekistan. The city was incorporated into the Umayyad caliphate at the beginning of the 8th century.

Textile Fragment ca. 1021-36 The two opposing lines of kufic inscription repeat the Shii Shahada (Muslim profession of faith) which includes a mention of ‘Ali, son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, as Wali-ullah (Friend of God). The inscription also includes the name of the Fatimid caliph al-Zahir (r. A.D. 1021-36) allowing us to date the fabric to the early 11th century. The red kufic is enlivened by occasional tendrils in black embroidery between letters. The two lines of inscription are separated by a figural decorative border depicting alternating birds and quadrapeds in roundels of blue and red ground. Shroud ca. A.D. 125 Roman Period Viewed vertically this shroud has an architectural structure with a frieze of uraeus-cobras and a winged sun disk across the top, and registers of scenes down either side of the female figure as if she stood in a doorway. Placed over the supine mummy the naturalistic painted bust would lie over the face, and the panels of gods would have been draped along its sides.The womans rosy face and large eyes are striking. A long bone or ivory pin holds coils of her hair in place on top of her head, and she holds a small wreath in one hand. Over her abdomen Isis and Nephthys mourn, and over her lower body are placed the long strands of the late protective ornament as well as a net garment. Columns on either side of her head are invocations to the god Osiris, but her name is lost.The side panels are paired, showing the goddesses Isis and Nephthys as red kites (a bird related to the hawk); the four mummy-shaped “sons of Horus” associated with the bodily integrity
