Date: late 8th-9th century.The decorative use of rows of pearls ultimately derives from Sasanian Iran. The dragon has been a significant presence in Chinese art for thousands of years, but those depicted here have no heads. A flaw in the weave program may explain this anomaly, or the textile may have been woven in Central Asia, where the dragon motif was less well understood. Textile Fragment 13th-14th century Made in either the thirteenth or fourteenth century, this fragment emulates notable characteristics in technique and ornamentation of the highly popularized textile production of Western India, in the province of Gujarat, during the Middle Ages. Seen as a global commodity, these plain-woven, block-printed, cotton textiles, were known for their lightweight fabric and breathability and became highly sought-after trading goods across the Indian Ocean in areas neighboring the Red Sea, as well as places along the coast of Malacca in Southeast Asia. This textile was found near Fustat, Egypt, which allowed for the preservation of its dye and fiber due to the sites arid and dry climate. The bold tendril design which links small medallions and six-pointed leaves recall designs found in the decorative programs of Jain painted manuscripts and architecture produced in Gujarat. Fragment from a Garment (smaller fragment, outer layer), 900s. China, Liao dynasty (907-1125), 10th century. Weft-faced compound twill, silk; overall: 35.9 x 46 cm (14 1/8 x 18 1/8 in.); mounted: 48.9 x 58.4 cm (19 1/4 x 23 in.). This textile preserves part of an overall design of large, radiating floral motifs arranged in staggered, horizontal rows. In the spaces between are pairs of flying cranes and cloud scrolls that are common motifs in Liao paintings and decorative arts. The loose structure of the pattern and the naturalism of the motifs represent the final evolution of a pattern that had originated in the Tang dynasty (AD 618-907).
