Band with Vine Scroll 4th-6th century The vine scroll, beautifully executed on the textiles seen here, is ubiquitous in the art of the Mediterranean world. It appears throughout the art of the early Byzantine period as a decorative motif, evoking the abundance of nature and the good life. Fragments of a textile with Medici emblems ca. 1492 Italian, probably Florence This fragment is all that remains of a spectacular example of the weaver's art. A red satin fabric, visible only in the outline of the design, was used as a foundation for a sumptuous pattern composed of glittering metal threads. Gold and silver metal strips were wound around colored silk threads to create the flexible threads that were then woven into pile loops. This is not technically classed as a velvet because the loops are made from metal thread wefts, not from supplementary silk warps, as in a true velvet.The design is the same as that seen on the back of the birth tray commissioned for Lorenzo de' Medici (see 1995.7): the three feather/plumes encircled by a diamond ring above a scrolling ribbon containing the word SEMPER, meaning "always." The feathers on the textile were originally silvery-white, red, and green, but the silver metal thread has tarnished, leaving the feather on the left side looking

Textile fragment: walking ram with a neckband and fluttering ribbons ca. 7th century A.D. Sasanian Textiles made in Egypt, the Near East, and western Central Asia in the Sasanian era were commonly decorated with a single animal, or a confronted pair. A particularly angular, geometric stylization of the animals characterized some of the pieces woven in Sogd, in western Central Asia. The precious quality of luxurious silks led to the transfer of textile patterns to other mediasilver vessels, stone carvings, and ceramicsmany of which were made centuries after the collapse of Sasanian Iran and the widespread Arab conquests in the Near East. The beribboned ram depicted on this textile fragment is of Sasanian inspiration. The gait of the animal and certain stylistic details such as the frontally represented spread horns and the neckband and fluttering ribbons are characteristic features of this motif as it occurs on Sasanian seals and stucco.. Fragment of a Carpet with Cartouche Border. Dimensions: Rug: L. 43 1/4 in. (109.9 cm)W. 49 in. (124.5 cm). Date: late 16th century.This carpet bears flowers on winding stems, birds, and Chinese cloud bands in a dense arrangement covering the entirety of its deep red ground. Similar imagery appears on works executed in other media, including in painting and bookbinding, from sixteenth century Iran, where it references the role of hunting and gardens in the lives of Safavid elite. Kesa Made 1615-1699 Japan. The Chinese method for making gold ìthreadî out of paper coated with lacquer, finished with a layer of gold leaf, and cut into very fine strips was admired greatly by the Japanese but wasnít adopted in Japan until the late 16th century. Until then, and even after, Chinese textiles utilizing this kinran thread were imported into Japan. The term kinran is also applied to a specific type of textile made in Japan, usually at Nishijin, in Kyoto, that typically displays floral patterns in gold against silk in a dark color. This example features peony blossoms with a lotus pod in the center.. Silk and gilt-paper strip; twill and satin weaves with secondary binding warps and supplementary patterning wefts .
