Woman in Manteau Robert Henri (American, 1865-1929). Woman in Manteau, 1898. Oil on canvas, 58 1/16 x 38 11/16 in. (147.5 x 98.3 cm). Painted in Paris at a time when Robert Henri was determined to make his professional mark as a young artist, this workin a dark, smoky palette deliberately recalling European Old Mastersfeatures his favorite model, Berthe Terrier. Although he intentionally allied his art with revered tradition, Henri also added a contemporary mood by portraying Terrier with a bold, almost defiant expression. X-radiographs reveal that Henri repainted this work extensively as he struggled to capture his model’s anatomy. At an earlier stage (see illustration), the placement of the shawl exposed much more of her shoulders and bust. Such focus on the nude reflects the artist’s early academic training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where Thomas Eakins’s Realist tradition was still strongly felt. American Art 1898

Home Scene Thomas Eakins (American, 1844-1916). Home Scene, ca. 1871. Oil on canvas, 21 7/16 x 18 in. (54.4 x 45.7 cm). Model Sisters Thomas Eakins and John Singer Sargent were just beginning their hugely successful careers when they turned to cherished sisters as their models for these two intimate works. Although both had studied figure painting in Paris, they found powerful inspiration in Dutch and Spanish seventeenth-century painting (especially the works of Rembrandt van Rijn and Diego Velázquez), famous for their expressive description of light and shadow. Eakins painted his sister Margaret (1853-1882) overseeing the younger Caroline (1865-1889) at a time when their mother was gravely ill. Sargents similarly tender and richly brushed portrait of his little sister Violet (1870-1955) is his earliest surviving oil portrait. American Art ca. 1871

In the first centuries after the advent of Islam, Arabic calligraphyalluding to the written word of Godwas one of the main characteristics distinguishing the art of Islam from that of the preceding Byzantines and Sasanians in the Near East. In sixteenth-century Iran, calligraphy was a highly revered art form, visible in the public sphere in architectural inscriptions and, in more private and exclusive circles, collected by the court and wealthy elite to be assembled and enjoyed in albums.
