The woodcut on verso of title was used first as the title on Lotz 3a Guentel's first book and again in 1529 (Lotz 3e, in MMA). According to Lotz loc.cit. there were three editions of this book, of which this is the second. The first appeared in 1541 (Lotz 216). Comparision with the unique copy of the 1541 in the V. & A. shows same blocks and patterns in different order. The arms of Cologne are by Anton Woensam von Worms (see Merlo loc.cit.). Piece late 17th-early 18th century Japan Judging from the traces of a rounded corner and former fold across the center of this textile, it may once have been a sleeve. A piece of this cloth in the National Museum of Japanese History, Sakura, bears an inscription with a date corresponding to 1710 that associates the cloth with a woman. It is rare for a stencil-dyed textile to be securely dated, especially with such a comparatively early date. A stencil was probably used to apply resist paste before this textile was dyed with indigo. Touches of darker indigo enhance the pattern here and there.. Piece 61829

Portrait of a Woman Robert Feke (American, ca.1707-ca.1752). Portrait of a Woman, 1748. Oil on canvas, 49 3/8 x 39 9/16 in. (125.4 x 100.5 cm). The Conservator's Eye An X radiograph of this portrait reveals a compositional change invisible to the naked eye: the elimination of an elaborate blue drape that initially hung from the sitters right shoulder and wrapped around her waist. This hidden feature shows up in the radiograph because Robert Feke used lead white pigment to paint the highlights. Lead is a dense material that absorbs X-rays, causing the highlights to appear white in the radiograph, even where they have been covered with additional paint. The blue color of the draping is visible within the cracks under strong magnification. Feke made this change late in the painting process, but it is unknown if the change was made at the sitters request. American Art 1748
