Sitara, Interior Door Curtain of the Ka'ba Patron Sultan Abdülhamid II Ottoman Turkish Workshop of Warshat al-Khurunfish Egyptian dated 1315 AH/1897-98 CE This Sitara is a very rare example of a curtain that once hung inside the Bab al-Tawba (Door of Repentance) of the Kaba, the structure in Mecca that Muslims believe is the house of God on earth. The Ottoman sultans name, Abdülhamid II, who had the imperial prerogative of ordering the replacement of textiles for the Kaba, appears in the fifth line beneath four quranic cartouches. A medallion-like calligraphic composition in the center of the lower half contains the name and titles of Abbas Hilmi Pasha, seeking with this offering blessing for him and his family. Such a centralized design emphasizes the political prominence of the local ruler of Egypt, who oversaw production of the textile at the Warshat al-Khurunfish in Cairo and its transportation during the hajj.

Ceremonial Banner (Palepai Maju) probably 18th century Lampung In Indonesia textiles have great value as ritual objects and as a form of wealth. Among the most spectacular are the "ship cloths" of the Lampung region in Southern Sumatra, which often depict large ships. This unique beaded ship cloth is perhaps the finest surviving example of the type. The dimensions and design of this textile relate to wall hangings called "palepai," which were displayed by aristocrats on important ceremonial occasions such as marriages, circumcisions, and funerals.The composition is dominated by two ships. The ship on the left, set in a night sky, holds a pyramidal shrine representing a sacred mountain or tree. The ship on the right, in a dawning sky, carries what may be a throne ("pepadon," or seat of merit). The ships are separated by a third ship, which bears a mountain.. Textile Wrapper for Jingoji Sutras 1099-1199 Japan. This wrapper would have held 10 sutra scrolls. It is made of about 300 strips of bamboo dyed black and fastened with colorful braided silk cords, the coloring of which softly shades from green to white to orange-red. Under the bamboo is a sheet of mica that gives the wrapper added opulence and also protects the sutra from water. Three wrought-metal butterflies adorn the embroidered silk frame. The wooden tag affixed to the wrapper says, ìRules and Laws on Lives of Monks and Nuns (Maka sÙgi ritsu).îThe lacquer box, only 45 of which remain, is also from the same set. Each box would have held several wrappers and about 60 sutra scrolls. The contents of this particular box, which did not include the scroll on display, are written in red lacquer on the outside.. Buddhist Priest's Vestment made from a Chinese Robe 18th century Japan This large rectangular patchwork is a Japanese kesa, or Buddhist priest's vestment, that was made from a Chinese court robe with its characteristic pattern of dragons. Dragon robes were rare and valued in Japan in the eighteenth century, and several Japanese kesa made from Chinese dragon robes survive in various collections around the world. The dragons on this kesa, as well as on the Chinese court robe also displayed here, are five-clawed dragons (long). However, on the kesa, every occurrence of a fifth claw is embroidered over with a cloud pattern, transforming each long into a four-clawed dragon (mang), appropriate for lower ranks. The mandala (or mandara in Japanese) is a diagrammatic tool used by Buddhists to guide their meditation and prayer. In this early Diamond World (Kongō-kai) mandala, the primary deity, Dainichi Buddha, is in the top section; in most other mandalas the primary deity appears at the center. Chasuble. Culture: Italian. Dimensions: Length at CB: 50 in. (127 cm). Date: 16th century.This early-18th century chasuble is adorned with 16th-century orphreys; a notable example of how these embroidered bands were treasured, preserved and reapplied to chasubles from one century to the next. The skilled workmanship depicts 4 church figures: St. Anthony of Padua, with a book as Doctor of the Church; possibly St. Leonard of Porto Maurizio, with a large cross alluding to the devotion of the Stations of the Cross, which he championed; St. Francis of Assisi, shown with stigmata, and St. Bonaventure, with a book as a Doctor of the Church, as well as a double-barred cross and the red hat of a cardinal. The figures of both Sts. Leonard and Bonaventure are cut off, which indicates that the embroidery is being re-used. It is possible that since all of the saints depicted are Franciscans, the piece may have been originally made for Franciscans. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Silk textile with Seraphim and Crosses 17th century Ottoman This textile may be compared with another textile in the Museums collection (17.22.2a-d) with a very similar pattern, but incorporating metal-wrapped threads. The all-silk version would have been less expensive to manufacture, and could possibly have been a provincial imitation of textiles produced in Constantinople and Bursa. Note that the Greek letters of the inscriptions have been reversed. The size and shape of the piece suggest that it formed part of a phelonion, or chasuble.. Pillar from Tomb Chamber 100 BCE-1 BCE China. In northern China during the Han dynasty, hollow clay bricks were used to construct the small, rectangular chambers of underground tombs. The doors, pillars, and lintel assembled here reconstruct the entrance to such a chamber. Before firing, the bricks were stamped with vigorous images from daily life and from mythology. This combination of subject matters reflects a dualistic view of the human soul separating at death, one part of the soul was thought to remain in the earthly tomb, while the other ascended to a paradiseóthe realm of ancestral spirits and of the special beings who have achieved immortality.Guardian images, both realistic and symbolic, are centered on each door. Embroidered Hanging late 14th century German Medieval theology often interpreted episodes from Hebrew scripture as prefigurations of events in the New Testament. The Sacrifice of Isaac, for example, was seen as an allusion to the Crucifixion. The present embroidery likely had a pendant depicting scenes from the life of Christ. The presence of saints venerated especially in Hildesheim, such as Epiphanius, Bernward, and Godehard, supports an attribution to a convent in the vicinity. Serape ca. 1865-70 Unidentified Serapes (the Spanish term for blanket) are a prominent form of Navajo weaving. Vibrantly colored and vividly patterned, these wearing blankets build on long-established design themes. Contemporary Native artists and scholars have identified this large weaving, with its unusual white background, as a "not- of-free-will" blanketmeaning it was likely produced by a highly skilled Navajo woman enslaved in a Spanish American household. An 1865 congressional report estimated that there were between 1,500 and 3,000 Navajo captives living in the Rio Grande Valley as well as in northern Mexico in these years. Date: fourth quarter 17th century.Ecclesiastical garments were meant to contribute to the sense of mystery and awe associated with worship; this beautifully crafted dalmatic and maniple exemplify that practice. The depiction of the saints is artfully rendered, the skin tones expressed in applied silk with facial features and other details, such as hair and the definition of fingers depicted in embroidery. The monk's costume is recreated in particularly fine detail, down to the knotted cord chinstrap on his hat. The saints have been identified as St. Bonaventure, in Franciscan habit, wearing a cardinal's hat and holding a book and crosier, and St. John the Baptist in a brown camel's hair tunic and red mantle, holding Lamb of God and a banner. But during her marriage ceremonies, she donned a brightly embroidered head covering with nine pillowed medallions arrayed along the center seam.
