Date: ca. 1540.This velvet fragment is said to have once formed part of the interior of a tent used by Kara Mustapha Pasha during the second Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683. The tent probably was captured from the Turkish army as war booty. These types of Safavid velvets were also used for furnishings, cushions, and ceremonial robes, and were produced in a royal workshop in Tabriz. The Safavid court favored figurative velvets that depicted hunting, a recreational passion of Persian royalty, or, in some cases, scenes from poetic texts. This fragment features a recurring motif--a young hero hurling a rock at a dragon, watched by two birds on a nearby tree. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Back panel for a bed (Lit à la duchesse en impériale) ca. 1780-90 Tapestry made at Beauvais As its full-size domed canopy is suspended from the ceiling rather than supported on posts, this tester bed, which bears the stamp of the menuisier Georges Jacob, is a type called lit à la duchesse en impériale. Its original but now fragile hangings, woven in 1782-83 at the Beauvais tapestry manufactory after designs by Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811), have been replaced by modern silk damask, except for the lining of the interior dome. Bookbinding with Animals in a Landscape mid-16th century This bookbinding is a rare example surviving from the Akbar period. Although the contents of the manuscript it covered are now dispersed, it once contained the Persian poet Jamis retelling of the tale of Yusuf and Zulayka from the Quran. Depictions of predators chasing and attacking prey were painted and gilded onto a papier-mché surface that was then lacquered to produce a durable finish. Quilt, Presentation pattern. Culture: American. Designer: Designs attributed to Mary Hergenroder Simon (1808-1877). Dimensions: 106 1/4 x 103 3/4 in. (269.9 x 263.5 cm). Date: ca. 1849.This Baltimore Presentation quilt is appliquéd with vibrant floral wreaths, a delicate basket of fruits and flowers, and assorted birds in multicolored cottons. It is most likely the work of Mary Simon (born 1810), who is thought to have worked as a professional quiltmaker in Baltimore during the 1840s and 1850s. The designs on the quilt are separate bits of brightly colored fabric. Since this quilt was made completely by one person, most likely to commemorate a specific occasion, it is best described as a Presentation quilt rather than an Album quilt, in which blocks would have been made by a group of quiltmakers. Because the quilt came to the Museum without a provenance, the circumstances of its commission are unknown. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Coverlet (Colcha) 17th century Indian, Bengal, Satgaon One of a group of textiles whose production is attributed to the area of Satgaon in Bengal¹, coverlets such as this were made primarily for the Portuguese market, hence the Portuguese term (colcha) by which they are known. In the early seventeenth century they also fetched high prices at auctions in England and seem to have influenced the production of embroidery there (see MMA 34.104.1 and MMA 1970.173). Characterized by the use of yellow tussah silk embroidery on a white cotton ground, they typically depict a combination of classical, biblical, and Hindu themes, although a few draw from other sources (see e.g. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, no. T20e4).
