Maharana Amar Singh II, Prince Sangram Singh and Courtiers Watch a Performance ca. 1705-8 India (Rajasthan, Mewar) This scene of actors and acrobats performing for the maharana exemplifies the changes that were taking place in painting during Amar Singh II's reign. Like his seventeenth-century predecessors, the artist has depicted several moments in time simultaneously; however, he is no longer strictly dividing the moments from one another. Instead, he has collapsed time, picturing different episodes side by side while making no attempt to clarify the sequence in which they occurred. The artist merely hints at temporal disjunctions through shifts in scale, showing the ruler and his nobles in the upper left to be larger than the actors below. Four Tiles with a Figural Scene Made 1601-1700 Persia. The practice of decorating tiles with bright colors outlined in black was known as cuerda seca, which translates as ìdry cordî from Spanish. Cuerda seca developed in the Islamic lands of Spain, Iran, and Central Asia at the end of the 14th century and remained popular in these regions for several centuries. The black line between colors allowed for carefully distinguished forms that otherwise might have been muddles during the firing process.These tiles are a section of a larger scene depicting the life of the epic Persian hero Bahram Gur. Here, gazelles festively play along the bank of a river as young man plays the flute and another presumably bridles a horse, of which only the nose is visible. Similar figures appear in different sets of tiles, evidence of the use of pattern books or stock images for similar scenes. The tales of Bahram Gur were popular subjects for both smaller decorative objects and long epic books, such as the

The 'Niglett' Dish, Bristol, dated 1733. This piece is the basis for much early chinoiserie decoration on delftware being ascribed to John Niglett, since the initials have been assumed to be those of Niglett and his wife Esther. John Niglett was apprenticed to Thomas Dixon of the Brislington Pottery in 1714.
