At the very end of the scroll, Ōkyo dates his painting to the spring of 1793 and notes that it is modeled after the work of the sixteenth-century Chinese painter Qiu Ying (1494-1552). Although horseback riding at West Lake is not a subject Qiu Ying is known to have painted, the distinct depiction of willow trees here is consistent with works associated with the painter in Japan.

Basket of Flowers with Bamboo Blind ca. 1799-1810 Katsushika Hokusai Japanese A basket of flowers with long, pendant cords blown by the wind appears beneath a partially rolled-up bamboo blind, or misu. The long, horizontal format is particularly daring. Closer inspection reveals an embossed decoration on the white cords. Hokusai's signature reads Sri aratame Hokusai Shin ga ("painted by Hokusai Shin, changed from Sri"); two seals, in red and white characters, read Tokimasa. In this painting two luohan crossing the sea, one riding a dragon and another a turtle, are greeted by an emperor-like figure holding a scholar's tablet, bowing in respect. A servant carries a tripod vessel on his head as a gift. The scroll ends with three women at the door of an underwater palace. ink on paper. Origin: China. Date: 16th-17th century. Deer amid Pine Trees 19th century Unidentified artist Depicting idyllic landscapes, the two scrolls displayed here celebrate auspicious imagery, especially deer and pine trees. Originally they were probably part of a set featuring the ten symbols of longevity. The blue and green landscape setting also carries a favorable meaning: it evokes an archaic style associated with a golden age in China to which later artistic traditions throughout East Asia often alluded. The pictorial theme of the ten symbols of longevity was especially fashionable in Korea during the Joseon dynasty, and most extant works date to the nineteenth century. Painted or embroidered folding screens on the subject were initially produced for the royal court to display at palace events. The appealing motifs also filtered into folk paintings.. Grapevine in the Wind 16th century Unidentified artist A wind-tossed grapevine, heavy with ripening fruit, is rendered with masterfully fluent brush techniques. The sway of the serpentine branches is executed with strokes of changing speed and pressure to suggest both contour and volume in a technique known as flying white” (in which areas of unpainted silk are left visible). The contrasting textures of the plump fruit and fragile leaves are achieved with carefully modulated tones of ink.Along with the so-called Four Gentlemen (plum, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and orchid), the grapevine was a favored motif among literati painters of the Joseon dynasty. As a vehicle for displaying the artist’s calligraphic techniques and styles—a talent every scholarly gentleman was expected to possess—ink monochrome works of grapevines were considered a worthy part of the literati painter’s repertoire.. (24.4 x 35.2 cm). This painting illustrates the story of Prince Rama, who is wrongly exiled from his fathers kingdom, accompanied only by his wife and brother. On their first night outside of the palace the three royals have to sleep on the ground in outfits made of leaves. Ramas brother (with white skin) talks with the leader of a forest-dwelling tribe, whose men bring provisions. The image was created in brighter shades, as was typical for Indian painting, and then the artist applied a thin wash of bluish-gray over the entire surface, like a veil or curtain, to create the effect of the gloom of night. Sixteen Illustrations of Ancient Ceremonial Displays 1903 Furuya Kōrin This lavishly illustrated book in deluxe format captures the appearance of how elite residences of premodern times would decorate public rooms for special occasions. The artist Furuya Kōrin took his art name from the great eighteenth-century Kyoto artist Ogata Kōrin, who is famous for revitalizing imagery of the classical literary world as imagined by Tawaraya Sōtatsu of the seventeenth century. This early twentieth-century fascination with Japans past is a response to the unbridled modernization of the country and the loss of a sense of tradition. Gillieron, pere on the basis of other fragments of frescos from Knossos, mostly of a much smaller scale. It has been shown that details of the facial outline of the "Cup-bearer" fresco, a reproduction of which is displayed in the exhibition, supplied the model for the faces of the "Ladies in Blue", which are not preserved at all.This copy reproduces the few fragments of burnt and abraded original fresco, represented as slightly offset from the restoration, and shows the extent to which the Gillierons recreated the scene. Writing box with moon and wave design, 18th century, Unknown Japanese, 8 7/8 x 9 3/4 in. (22.54 x 24.77 cm), Lacquer with gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e, Japan, 18th century, Suzuribako, beautifully ornamented lacquer boxes with compartments for an ink stone, ink stick, water dropper, and brushes, became popular during the Muromachi period (1392-1573). By the Edo period, lacquer artists adroitly combined a variety of materials to produce sumptuous objects of great visual appeal. For this box, the waves and sea spray were rendered in silver, which has oxidized to a pewter-gray color. The moon, too, is a silver disk, and would have flashed brilliantly against the dark background sprinkled lightly with gold flakes.
