Landscapes with Poems 1688 Gong Xian Chinese Remaining loyal to the vanquished Ming dynasty, the hermit Gong Xian came to terms with himself as an yimin, or leftover subject,” under the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). In this leaf, from an album in which he compared his favorite haunts in and around the former Ming capital of Nanjing with the abodes of the immortals, Gong complemented his image of a reclusive dwelling with a poem that contrasts the ability of orchids, symbols of virtuous men, to endure the cold winter, while brambles — lowly men — are used as firewood. The artist perfected a technique of ink wash and dotting that enabled him to achieve both density and translucency in his paintings. Date: 1550s.In China during the turbulent years of the early Western Jin dynasty (265-317), seven literati secluded themselves in a bamboo grove outside the capital. There they escaped from the strictures of officialdom and Confucian conduct, drinking wine, engaging in witty Daoist discourse called qingtan, and playing music and chess. Their story became legend and the frequent subject of painting in China, and eventually Japan. In this unusually exuberant interpretation by Sesson, the sages dance wildly in the company of equally ebullient women and children. Even the bamboo seems to sway to the sages' drumbeat.Although this type of departure from traditional iconography led to the occasional characterization of Sesson a

Taira no Koremori’s Farewell,” from The Tale of the Heike (Heike monogatari) ca. 1640 Iwasa Matabei (Katsumochi) This painting pictorializes a scene from The Tale of the Heike, the great early medieval tale of war, valor, and tragic love that commemorates the Genpei War of 1180-85, which pitted the two great courtier families—the Taira (Heike clan) and Minamoto (Genji clan)—against each other. Matabei captures one of the most pivotal and poignant episodes of the entire tale, showing one of the last heirs to the Taira family’s power, Lieutenant General (Ch?j?) Koremori, bidding farewell to his wife. As an artist, Matabei established a reputation for adding psychological suggestiveness to his compositions, seen here in the central figures, where the poses and effective use of blank space imply that both realize they will hereafter be separated. In contrast, the attendants have animated facial expressions, manifesting the exaggerated features for which the artist became famous.. Taira n

Quail, Sparrows, and Millet early 16th century Japan A flock of quails and pair of sparrows gather around stalks of millet, their heads heavy with ripe seed on an autumn day. The theme of quails and autumn grasses was widely depicted in China during the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279), most often by painters in attendance at the imperial court. Many works on the theme were brought to Japan and entered the collections of Buddhist temples, while a select few entered prestigious private collections such as that of the Ashikaga family, who ruled Japan as military dictators during the Muromachi period. These works served as important models for later Japanese artists. The present example reflects the unidentified Japanese painters familiarity with these earlier Chinese works.. The Five Virtues Artist's working dates 1890-1900 China. Ren Yi was among the most successful and influential among Chinese painters of the so-called Shanghai School. Arriving in Shanghai in 1857, he took the artistic name ìbonianî (one-hundred years), claiming that it would take him a century to achieve success. However, by 1875 Ren Yi was the best-known painter in Shanghai. His highly sought-after bird-and-flower paintings initially followed the Song dynasty (960ñ1279) convention of applying rich color fields within outlines, producing decorative patterning with lifelike representation. This work represents his mature, more spontaneous style that is characterized by looser brushwork, more ink washes, and greater tonal variation. These five pairs of birds represent the Five Cardinal Relationships, following the Neo-Confucian principle that strict and proper implementation of hierarchy among different groups achieves social harmony. Above, a pair of long-tailed phoenixes roosting in the

(155.42 × 108.59 cm) (mount, without roller), Ink and color on paper, Japan, 18th century, Nothing is known about the painter Iwai Kōun except that he was born in Nagasaki, the only port town in Japan that allowed foreigners to trade and live there during the Edo period (1603-1868). Nagasaki paintings reflect the strong influence of Chinese art, which arrived there on merchant ships. On the right side of this painting, a praying mantis has caught a wasp and is about to kill it. A monkey in the tree above watches the spectacle, while he is observed by another monkey on the far left.
