One of a Pair of Chair Strips with Auspicious Patterns 18th century China Unlike upholstered furniture in the West, chairs in China were, historically, covered only temporarily with textiles. These chair strips (ass also 65.210.1) were designed and woven specifically for the purpose. As is typical of such strips, the length is divided into multiple segments, each bearing a different design for the part of the chair it coversthe front legs, seat, or backas well as a short segment that hangsbehind the chair.This pair of auspiciously patterned chair strips was appropriate for special occasions such as birthday celebrations. Peaches (symbols of immortality) and the character for longevity (shou) decorate the segment behind the chair, and the front legs are covered with a pattern of pavilions in the sea, which probably refers to the isles of the immortals.. Flowers and Grasses of the Four Seasons late 16th century Circle of Kano Mitsunobu In this lyrical variation of the common theme of Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons, delicately rendered insects such as dragonflies, butterflies, and praying mantises hover among kerria roses, peonies, chrysanthemums, bush clover, and snow-dusted lantern flowers. Scallop-edged golden clouds and the graceful arcs of eulalia grasses form repeating, rhythmic patterns. The treatment of pictorial elements is consistent with the gentle, elegant painting style of Kano Mitsunobu, whose works graced a number of Kyoto palaces and temples. Parallels can also be drawn to lacquer decoration at the mausoleum of warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Kyotos K?daiji Temple. The lacquered and maki-e-decorated panels, associated with the K?ami school of Kyoto lacquer artisans, display repeating autumn grasses resembling motifs in Mitsunobus paintings and this pair of screens.. A great interest in Western scientific studies developed in Japan during the late Edo period (1615-1868) and into the Meiji era (1868-1912). This painting is an assemblage of objects carefully observed from nature, but not usually seen together.

Birds and Flowers, mid-1400s-early 1500s. Attributed to Sesshū Tōyō (Japanese, 1420-1506). Two hanging scrolls from a triptych; ink and color on silk; overall: 117 x 58 cm (46 1/16 x 22 13/16 in.). These two paintings are possibly by Sessh Ty. They once flanked a central scroll with an ink landscape. The unbalanced nature of the compositions, however, suggests they may be images recycled from larger paintings. The one with sweet osmanthus and hibiscus is an autumn scene, the other is a summer scene with daylilies and gardenias. Folding screens often contrast two seasons or depict all four across a single pair of screens. Sessh’s works were sufficiently prized that repurposing them in fragmentary form to display in an alcove of a luxurious room would not be an unusual choice.
