Date: ca. 1803-56.A meandering vine encloses multicolor ambi, or mangoshaped, motifs on this choga, a loose-fitting, open-fronted robe worn as an outer garment in Central Asia, Russia, North Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. This coat was likely made in Kashmir, as the double-interlocking twill tapestry weave (kanni) used to make it was a specialty of the region. Later, the coat made its way into the wardrobe of Saiyid Sa'id, sultan of Zanzibar and imam of Muscat, Oman (1803-56). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Womans Festival Robe late 19th century China The golden five-clawed dragons on this robe indicate that it was woven for an empress or imperial consort of lower rank. While it retains the imagery mandated in the mid-eighteenth century court regulations, changes in the rendering of these designs help date this robe to the late nineteenth century. The heads of the dragons appear swollen and disproportionate to the bodies, and their claws have lost their strength. The standard rock and waves pattern at the hem have also changed. The diagonal waves are longer, straighter, and less realistic. These stylistic changes parallel those found on other works of art made at the same time.. Womans Festival Robe. This example features eight medallions, each consisting of a stylized crane surrounded by patterns of bottle-gourd vines. (120.65 x 110.01 cm), Silk, cotton, mirrors; embroidery, India, 19th century, Probably the finest embroidery in all of India came from the Kutch region of Gujarat, where minute stitching and mirror work was a specialty of several Muslim groups. A wealthy Muslim woman would have worn this kind of tunic only on special occasions, completing the ensemble with a coordinating veil and a pair of loosely fitting silk trousers (ejar) with embroidered cuffs.

Manchu Man's Semiformal Court Robe (chi-fu), 1723-1735, L.57 in., Silk tapestry (k'o-ssu), China, 18th century, By the late eighteenth century, dragons on court robes had become smaller, and a variety of auspicious symbols, such as bats, peaches, flowers, and attributes of the eight immortals (seen on this robe), had begun to appear among the intricate cloud and wave patterns. The striped water designs at the bottom of the robes became increasingly prominent and eventually dominated the hemlines of nineteenth-century robes. This is one of the few solid gold-ground dragon robes known.

Man's Audience Robe (Chaofu) second half of the 19th century China A chaofu, or audience robe, featuring a fully pleated skirt was the most formal type of men's court dress. Sumptuary regulations set in the mid-eighteenth century dictated that only the emperor and heir apparent could wear robes emblazoned with five-clawed dragons, but in the nineteenth century, these mandates were often overlooked. Manchu Emperors ceremonial twelve-symbol jifu court robe, 1723-1735, L.54-3/4 in., Silk tapestry (kesi), China, 18th century, Eight golden dragons cavort across this imperial robe, while a ninth hides under the front fold of the skirt. These dragons are part of the twelve symbols of imperial authority whose arrangement on the robe was prescribed by official dress edicts put into effect in 1759. The sun, moon, mountain, and constellation emblems are positioned symmetrically around the neckband. The other eight imperial symbols—dragon, ax, cups, flame, bat, grain, pheasant, and waterweed—are arranged on the front and back of the robe. Only the top members of the royal family—emperor, empress, empress dowager, and crown prince—could wear twelve-symbol robes. A bright yellow dragon robe like this could be worn only by the emperor himself.
