Woman's unofficial informal robe, late 19th-early 20th century, 47 1/4 × 69 1/2 in. (120.02 × 176.53 cm), Satin, China, 19th-20th century, The unofficial wardrobes of Chinese noble women were less standardized but almost as sumptuous as court attire. The cut, symbolic content and decorative motifs vary considerably from court wear, while aesthetic considerations and individual taste are given far greater rein.

Cape 1840-70 Hungarian Stewart Culin (1858-1929) was the Brooklyn Museum's first Curator of Ethnology from 1903 to 1929. Culin conducted collecting expeditions, traveling throughout the United States and the world. His goals for these trips were not just to expand the Museum's holdings, but to also provide context for these objects within their cultures. In addition to choosing rare and high-quality pieces, Culin sought artifacts with interesting provenance as well.This cape, or suba, is a traditional garment of Hungarian shepherds. The suba is awe-inspiring with its use of sheepskin in the body of the garment as well as the full black lamb pelt draped over the shoulders. The dense foliate embroidery and leather appliqués are characteristically Hungarian. Despite their grand appearance, subas served more than just festival purposes. For shepherds working outside they provided protection from weather, as well a seat or bed. The suba also served as a surface for eating or drying meat.. C

Plastron (Collar) from a Tunic 19th century This plastron is a collar that would originally have been part of a tunic similar to C.I.56.11.2. This type of garment is a specialty of Hammamat in North East Tunisia, a town famous for its production of intricately embroidered tunics, with elaborate golden collars and sleeves. The meticulously embroidered plastron would be removed and reused in a new tunic when passed from one family member to another (see also C.I.X.48.1), allowing the most valuable part of the garment to remain in the same family for several generations.. Jinbaori Made 1701-1725 Japan. Jinbaori were special coats worn by samurai, members of the Japanese warrior class. The garments were sleeveless and had a tall rear ventóto accommodate being layered over armor, while the wearer was on horseback. The potent graphics and high-contrast colors were meant to convey a message of strength from a distance. This striking example sends a powerful visual message in its depiction of breaking waves and flying spray, dramatically presented in silhouette in black and yellow, as well as in its use of bear fur lining the armholes. On the back of the coat is the circular crest of the Honda family, an important warrior clan loyal to the ruling Tokugawa family (ruled 1615-1868).. The middle (shitagi) of a set of three formal kimono with long sleeves for an unmarried young woman (Furisode), with on the sleeves, front and back a trim of cranes above a rough sea.
