Opaque watercolor, gold, and silver on silk; overall: 43.8 x 11.1 cm (17 1/4 x 4 3/8 in.). Kneeling and holding his left hand in a gesture of reverential greeting, this Buddhist protector holds a stylized thunderbolt called a vajra, for which he is named. His black body is set off by the gold cloud and flames that stand out from the indigo sky through which birds of prey fly with serpents. His hair stands on end, and his eyesincluding his third eye of wisdombulge with ferocity. These attributes, plus the powerful bulk of his body, convey his ability to eradicate obstacles to enlightenment. Though unsigned, the painting appears to have been made by a high-ranking Tibetan patriarch. Rare examples of textiles from the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368), the upper and lower borders feature the Indian man-eagle Garuda, who in Tibetan Buddhism is associated w

The Naxi or Nakhi are an ethnic group inhabiting the foothills of the Himalayas in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, as well as the southwestern part of Sichuan Province in China. The Naxi are thought to have come originally from Tibet and, until recently, maintained overland trading links with Lhasa and India. The Naxi form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. The Naxi are traditionally followers of the Dongba religion. Through both Han Chinese and Tibetan cultural influences, they adopted Tibetan Buddhism and, to a lesser extent, Taoism, in the 10th century.

The Liao Dynasty, also known as the Khitan Empire, was a state that ruled over the regions of Manchuria, Mongolia, and parts of northern China proper. It was founded by the Yelü clan of the Khitan people in the same year as the Tang Dynasty collapsed (907), even though its first ruler, Yelü Abaoji (Yaruud Ambagai Khan), did not declare an era name until 916. Although it was originally known as the Empire of the Khitan, the Emperor Yelü Ruan officially adopted the name 'Liao' (formally Great Liao’) in 947. Another name for China in English, Cathay, is derived from the name Khitan. This is also the origin of the Russian word for China, ????? or Kitay, and that of several other East European languages. The Liao Empire was destroyed by the Jurchen of the Jin Dynasty in 1125. However, remnants of its people led by Yelü Dashi established the Xi (Western) Liao Dynasty 1125-1220, also known as Kara-Khitan Khanate, which extended its influence over Central Asia into Persia and survived until t

Pair of Copper-Plate Inscriptions with Engraved Designs 19th century India (Tamil Nadu) This pair of copper-plate temple records is a fine example of the late survival of a practice for recording in a non-perishable material, legal and other documents. Temple foundation and endowment records take two forms in traditional outh India-they are carved into the doorjambs and basement platforms of temples, and engraved onto copper-plate. The latter has been a preferred method of preserving vital documents, such as the transfer of land title and other deeds, since around the 5th century. These two copper-plates, engraved in a cursive mature Tamil script and language, record a dedication of gifts to a minor temple. The presiding deities of the temple are depicted in the upper cusped arch reverse. On plate a) the standing figure of Devi, the goddess, flanked by tall oil lamps; to the left is seen a holy man (rishi), perhaps one of the bhakti saints of Tamil Nadu; to the right is seen a female d
