Jhujhar Singh on Horseback ca. 1720-30 Attributed to Dalchand An inscription on the verso of this painting identifies "Rathor Jhujhar Singh, son of Sujan Singh from the village of Phluyai Phulya?." Jhujhar Singh was a minor landowning nobleman (thakur) of Marwar. He is shown armed with a lance as well as a bow and arrow and seated on a beautiful, dappled gray horse. In front of him is an attendant, also carrying a bow and arrow. The figures are set on a narrow, solid-colored band and backed by a uniform, warm sage green tone that is topped by a similar narrow band of sky. The overall formulation of such equestrian portraits derives from Mughal prototypes, as do the naturalistic rendering of the garments, the animal, and the portraits and the sage green background. The Sanskrit term nayika is typically translated as heroine, but more precisely a nayika is an idealized woman associated with various aspects of love, embodying a wide range of emotional and psychological states. Numerous literary works composed in India since at least the first century describe and categorize different types of nayikas. This utka nayika stands in glowing orange and gold in the night, waiting for her lover to arrive. Her demeanor is quiet and resolved. Her gesture indicates wonder, possibly that the clouds may be passing, and the moon may emerge to brighten the scene. She may also be astonished at her own perseverance and how she no longer feels the fear and agitation of the darkness and the solitude.

Based on the book of ancient Indian animal fables, the Panchatantra written by Vidyapati (Bidpai), the stories spread all over the Middle East where they became wildly popular. This manuscript has a strong flavor of Mamluk Egypt in the figure styles and bold drawings, with hints of Ottoman tulips and Safavid turbans. However, the burnt orange palette and darkly-inked lines have led to an attribution to Sultanate Gujarat where it is suggested this manuscript was copied from an Egyptian original. Its life in India is also attested by a Devanagari inscription at the end, although the rest of the Arabic text is written in a strong, left-leaning naskh-like script.. This royal woman wears a white cloak covered with a repeating gilded leaf pattern and a screen sewn in at the forehead. When the cloak is pulled over her face for added modesty, she looks out through the screen.
