Page from a Naishadha-carita of Shri Harsha Series Indian. Page from a Naishadha-carita of Shri Harsha Series, ca. 1800-1825. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, sheet: 11 5/8 x 15 5/8 in. (29.5 x 39.7 cm). The Naishadhacharita is an epic poem recounting the romance between the hero, Nala, and his wife, Damayanti. This page may depict episodes from the story after Nala has lost his kingdom and must serve as charioteer to King Rituparna. The king is shown seated on a horsedrawn cart with two attendants (both proportionally smaller than the king to show his importance) and wearing a crown (here a symbol of ancient royalty, as contemporary kings would have worn turbans). The purplecloaked figure of Nala appears three times, narrating consecutive episodes. This depiction of the passage of time on a single page is typical in Indian painting, but the use of a deep, open landscape setting is quite unusual. Asian Art ca. 1800-1825

Opaque watercolor and gold on paper; image: 22.7 x 15.3 cm (8 15/16 x 6 in.); overall: 27.1 x 19.8 cm (10 11/16 x 7 13/16 in.). Dalip Singh sits on a carpeted marble platform probably meant for meditation or relaxation, intently reading a page from a manuscript. The vertical red mark on his forehead reveals that he is a devotee of the Hindu god Vishnu. The delicate shading of the facial tones and hair gives the portrait a sense of naturalism. The figure is framed by the wispy branches of a willow and thick foliage of trees. This pious king is equally comfortable in either an urbane court or in nature. This painting was purchased from the Heeramaneck Collection, which in the 1970s was acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where Dr. Catherine Glynn Benkaim worked as a curator of Indian and Islamic art, and met her husband Ralph.

Yahya ibn Mahmod al-Wasiti was a 13th-century Arab Islamic artist. Al-Wasiti was born in Wasit in southern Iraq. He was noted for his illustrations of the Maqam of al-Hariri. Maqama (literally 'assemblies') are an (originally) Arabic literary genre of rhymed prose with intervals of poetry in which rhetorical extravagance is conspicuous. The 10th century author Badi' al-Zaman al-Hamadhani is said to have invented the form, which was extended by al-Hariri of Basra in the next century. Both authors' maqamat center on trickster figures whose wanderings and exploits in speaking to assemblies of the powerful are conveyed by a narrator. Manuscripts of al-Hariri's Maqamat, anecdotes of a roguish wanderer Abu Zayd from Saruj, were frequently illustrated with miniatures.

A Ruler Presents a Document to Visiting Nobles, c. 1700-20. Southern India, Deccan. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper; overall: 22 x 32.7 cm (8 11/16 x 12 7/8 in.). This large and rare painting represents a southern Indian genre of portraiture influenced by works from the imperial Mughal court based in northern India. Each of the three rajas (kings), seated on the carpet in the center of an open terrace, is depicted as an individual portrait, as are the figures of the other eight participants who form this courtly retinue. The artist carefully observed the facial features that served to define their various personalities. The occasion appears to be a diplomatic mission in which the visitor reads a letter to the two figures at the right, whose importance is indicated by their larger size. Other attendants or courtiers of lesser status are smaller in size, despite their location in the foreground.

This one portrays members of Abraham Pixlers family, with the parents, Abraham and Eve, at the top of the sheet and their three children, Absalom, David, and Levi, beneath them. The composition is conventional, as it follows the basic layout of countless family-record needlework pictures and pages of illuminated calligraphy, but also innovative in its use of portraits in place of the more commonly used names and symbols.. Intoxicated Lady at a Window Indian. Intoxicated Lady at a Window, late 18th century. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, sheet: 13 3/4 x 11 3/8 in. (34.9 x 28.9 cm). The male patrons for Indian painting commissioned many images of lovesick women who suffer terribly while their lovers are away. This woman sits at a window, perhaps watching for the arrival of her beloved. The use of a window as framing device here is somewhat ironic, because window frames appear more often in official portraits of rulers. Here, instead of a proud prince we see a woman who has been assuaging her longings with either wine or opium: she leans awkwardly on one arm, her eyes tinged with pink, her eyelids drooping. The fact that she wears no blouse suggests that she is a courtesan, but her jewelry and the precious flask and cup suggest that she enjoys a high level of patronage. What might be a tawdry or pathetic scene is elevated by the high quality of painting and the sophisticated palette of muted blues a

Fighting first with lances, they parry and pierce each other's armor until the lances fall apart. They then turn to their swords but again succeed only in breaking each other's weapons. Watercolor, graphite, ink, and tin on paper; secondary support: 60.8 x 42.3 cm (23 15/16 x 16 5/8 in.); painting only: 45.4 x 27.8 cm (17 7/8 x 10 15/16 in.). The Tarakeshwar murder case of 1873 was a public scandal in Calcutta. It concerned an affair between Elokeshi, a young wife, and the chief priest of the Shiva temple at Tarakeshwar. Having learned about the affair, her jealous husband cut Elokeshis throat with a fish knife on May 27, 1873. In the subsequent trial, the husband, Banerji, was sentenced to life imprisonment and the priest was fined and imprisoned for three years. Several Bengali plays and Kalighat images were inspired by this affair and depicted events that did not actually occur but were imagined by the artist. The Mahant (head priest), the adulterer, is here depicted atop an elephant, a symbol of royalty and status. While it is not known whether he actually rode an elep
