Date: 1764-72.Harunobu, who is credited with the introduction of the polychrome print, also depicts courtesans on display in a Yoshiwara teahouse, but there is considerable difference in his treatment of the subject. While Moronobu observes the watchers and the watched with a uniform and impersonal gaze, Harunobu contrasts the observers and the observed.Like Moronobu, Harunobu uses a window, a frame within a frame, to depict inside and outside simultaneously, but, instead of a view from the street, he situates the viewer within the intimacy of the pleasure house. The neutral vantage point of a passerby has become the psychologically charged perspective of someone on the inside. Rice-Pounding Rabbit 1855 Japan. This humorous scene of a rabbit pounding a mochi rice cake in a Chinese-style urn represents a sophisticated layering of narrative and pictorial traditions. In East Asian lore, rice cakeñpounding rabbits are said to live on the surface of the moon. The artist Tanaka Shutei, an active printer and print designer in Osaka, also referenced a scene from the popular story of Kaguya Hime. He depicted Kaguya, a princess from the moon, in her lunar palace, peeking at the work of the rabbit. The rabbit heralded the arrival of both the year of the rabbit and the New Year in general, as rice cake pounding is an important activity at that time of year.. Color woodblock print; surimono . Attributed to Shi Nai'an and written in vernacular Chinese.

Date: ca. 1675-80.This print and its text present a wittily updated version of the two brine gatherers' tragic love for Yukihira, who was in exile at Suma. At the right he strolls arm in arm with the sisters Matsukaze and Murasame. Despite their droll aristocratic attire, the trio's deportment is that of pleasure-seeking youth in the bustling entertainment quarters of Edo. At the left the two women in contemporary garb who dip buckets are identified as seaweed gatherers ("shiokumi"), the name of a popular Kabuki dance that represented the immortal legend at the time. Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.
