Hakone; Kosui ca. 1833-34 Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese Boasting splendid scenery, the Hakone pass nevertheless presented an extremely difficult mountain journey to travelers. One could look out from the pass over the clear waters of Lake Ashi toward Mount Fuji's peak and the Hakone Shrine in a dark forest. (36 x 23.5 cm). Inokashira Pond is intimately associated with Edo as the earliest source of its regular water supply. The Kanda Aqueduct, built in the early seventeenth century, carried its spring-fed waters to the city. The orientation of the geography here suggests a blending of two different points of view. The pond itself is represented as seen from the northwest, while both the mountains in the distance and the shrine to the goddess Benten in the foreground are shown as seen from the south. In the case of the shrine, the southern perspective enables a frontal view that emphasizes the shrine's importance. Asian Art 4th month of 1856

This print is similar in theme and composition to the view of Kawaguchi Ferry in number 20. Both are views of ferry crossings on major roads leading out of Edo, and as the most distant points in the series for their respective directions (north for Kawaguchi and northeast here), they serve to mark the outer geographical limits of the series as a whole. Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The people of Edo marked the autumn season with excursions to scenic attractions and harvest festivals, and viewing fall foliage at its peak. The prints numbered 73 through 98 suggest the activities of this season in Japan, the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Months. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige.

One special feature of the Eitaiji Temple garden was that it was open only one short period each year, beginning on the twenty-first day of the Third Month, the occasion of a memorial ceremony for Kobo Daishi, founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Although typically the public was not able to view the blooming of both pink cherries and red azaleas at the same time, the scene Hiroshige depicts here would have been possible every few years thanks to the variability of the lunar calendar. We can see not only his use of color to heighten the exotic ambiance of the Ryukyu Islands, but also his imaginative power to make alien islands familiar in the guise of Eight Views. Taito II, who studied with Hokusai, created this image of the Monkey Bridge in Kai Province, west of Tokyo. By depicting the moon beneath the narrow bridge, he emphasized the height of the gorge.Before it was given to the museum by one of its founders, Jeptha H. Wade, this print was trimmed. Uncut versions of the same scene include a section with a poetic inscription designed to look like a rubbing from a stone stele, or commemorative marker, often erected in scenic locations. Ink was also applied differently to produce varying effects in other impressions.

The Suijin Temple Grove, Uchikawa, and the Village of Sekiya 8th month 1857 Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese Hiroshige's use of cropping in this print has resulted in a startling abstract composition. The window describes a half circle while the edge of the shoji screen forms a vertical row of squares like a ladder. This pure geometry gives the picture compelling graphic force.Essentially, the artist has created a half-circular picture within this picture and thereby contrasted outside space to inside space. The latter, however, is very minimal, for most of the inside of the room has been cropped out of the picture. Nonetheless, Hiroshige leaves just enough room along the left edge of the picture to suggest the fragrance of the camellia in the flower holder hanging by the window. Contrasted to the camellia, is the plum blossom outside the window.This print illustrates a scene in Masaki, which was a district of Edo with teahouses where visitors would drop in on their way to the nearby Asakusa

The Fukagawa lumberyards, site of part of the huge supply of lumber needed by the world's largest wooden city, were of great economic importance. In early Edo, lumber was kept closer to the center of town. However, in the wake of a fire in 1641 that destroyed not only houses but the lumber needed to rebuild them as well, the government ordered the yards removed to the Fukagawa district. The snow falling on the water here provides one of the brightest images of winter in the series. Asian Art 8th month of 1856

Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The winter group, numbers 99 through 118, begins with a scene of Kinryuzan Temple at Akasaka, with a red-on-white color scheme that is reserved for propitious occasions. Snow immediately signals the season and is depicted with particular skill: individual snowflakes drift through the gray sky, while below, on the roof of a distant temple, dots of snow are embossed for visual effect. The fishing boats have come from Tsukudajima Island, lying silent in the distance.
