Suruga-cho, No. 8 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando) (Japanese, 1797-1858). Suruga-cho, No. 8 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 9th month of 1856. Woodblock print, Image: 13 1/2 x 8 5/8 in. (34.3 x 21.9 cm). What distinguishes Hiroshige's design in this print is its resolute symmetry, softened only by the irregular stylized cloud forms traditionally used in Japanese paintings to separate scenes in pictorial narratives. Here this compositional device focuses attention on Mount Fuji above and the urban bustle below in the street called Suruga-chō. Included in this scene is Japan's premier store, Echigoya, presently Mitsukoshi Department Store, still the most venerable of all the great merchandisers of Tokyo. It is identified by its crest, a circle around the characters for "three" and "well," which together read "Mitsui." Asian Art 9th month of 1856

Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The series continues with summer. Summer amusements of the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Months are represented in numbers 43 through 72. Evening outings in pleasure boats on the Sumida River were taken along the many famous bridges of Edo, where endless varieties of entertainment were offered. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige.

Moon-Viewing Point, No. 82 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando) (Japanese, 1797-1858). Moon-Viewing Point, No. 82 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 8th month of 1857. Woodblock print, Sheet: 14 3/16 x 9 1/4 in. (36 x 23.5 cm). Scholars have identified this as a scene in one of the many brothels or inns in the settlement of Shinagawa. Through the open window appears the harvest moon rising serenely in the autumn sky. In contrast to the fullness and perfection of the view outside, the scene within is one of incompletion and indirection. Beneath a lantern on the tatami mat lie the leftovers of a meal. At the very margins of the scene are two half-hidden figures. To the right is a geisha; the tip of a lute-like samisen and its box hint that she is about to leave. To the left, as indicated by the elaborate hairstyle, is a courtesan. The garment slipping onto the tatami suggests she is preparing for bed. Asian Art 8th month of 1857

The Kiso Mountains in Snow dated 8th month of the Snake year, 1857 Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese This landscape was executed by Hiroshige just one year before his death as part of a set of three triptychs on the theme known as setsugetsuka (a compound term made up of the words for snow, moon, and flowers). Snow is the theme here; the moon and flowers are depicted in the other two triptychs. The immense snow-covered mountains at the center, flanked by bridges on both sides, are almost spiritual in their monumentality. The dramatic composition invites the viewer to step into a mysterious world beyond the massive white peaks.. The Kiso Mountains in Snow. (25.7 x 18.4 cm) (image, sheet), Woodblock print (nishiki-e); ink and color on paper, Japan, 19th century, Kuniyoshi designed many prints featuring Confucian paragons. This print is from a series titled 'Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety in China,' which Kuniyoshi created in the late 1840s. He employed western perspective and chiaroscuro in a manner seen in 17th century European etchings. The rectangular cartouche contains the story of Shu Jushø (Zhu Shouchang, in Chinese), a man who searched for his mother for fifty years, having been separated from her when he was only seven years old. Kuniyohsi depicted Shu Jushø resting under a tree-thus suggesting his long, difficult quest.

A simple color scheme, limited to one or two colors, is characteristic of the primitive stage of woodblock printing in the early decades of the eighteenth century.

Japan: 'Evening at Ushigome', Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949), 1939. Tsuchiya Koitsu was an artist of the Shin Hanga movement. Shin hanga ('new prints') was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taish and Shwa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th-19th century). The movement flourished from around 1915 to 1942, though it resumed briefly from 1946 through the 1950s. Inspired by European Impressionism, the artists incorporated Western elements such as the effects of light and the expression of individual moods, but focused on strictly traditional themes of landscapes (fukeiga), famous places (meish), beautiful women (bijinga), kabuki actors (yakusha-e), and birds and flowers (kachga). Ushigome () is the name of a neighborhood in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and a former ward ( Ushigome-ku) in the now-defunct Tokyo City.

Minowa, Kanasugi, Mikawashima, No. 102 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando) (Japanese, 1797-1858). Minowa, Kanasugi, Mikawashima, No. 102 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 5th month of 1857. Woodblock print, Sheet: 14 3/16 x 9 1/4 in. (36 x 23.5 cm). The title of this print lists three different villages northwest of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. The names that appear first probably represent the nearest places in the view. This would mean that it is a scene looking from Minowa and Kanasugi toward Mikawashima, to the west or northwest. Mikawashima was where the shogun's Crane Hunt occurred almost every year during the winter months, when cranes migrated to Japan. The auspicious nature of the crane made it an important ceremonial gift. Aside from the one or two birds taken on each hunt, the cranes of Mikawashima were carefully protected, as Hiroshige has depicted: the figure in the background is carrying buckets filled with rice with which to feed them.

Ushimachi, Takanawa, No. 81 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando) (Japanese, 1797-1858). Ushimachi, Takanawa, No. 81 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 4th month of 1857. Woodblock print, Sheet: 14 3/16 x 9 1/4 in. (36 x 23.5 cm). This view depicts the fringe of Edo, ragged and unkempt, just outside of the Takanawa Gate, which marked the formal southern entrance to the city. Cast-off objects litter the road, adding a poetic touch. The watermelon rinds provide a sense of the summer season, while the discarded straw sandal evokes a long journey that has finally ended here, at the gateway to Edo. The huge section of an oxcart to the right marks the place as Ushimachi, or "Oxtown," the popular name for Shiba Kuruma-chō, which lay on both sides of the Takanawa Gate. Asian Art 4th month of 1857
