The scene here refers to the story of Li Kui (Jap.: Riki), a river pirate, who tries to steal fish from a fisherman’s boat. He is interrupted, however, by Zhang Shun (Jap.: Chōjun), the owner of the local fish market. The two men struggle underwater, but Zhang (with red loin cloth) has the upper hand, since he is reputed to be able to walk underwater for 10 miles and live there for seven nights and days, while Li can hardly swim.

Ibaraki was able to escape when the other demons were destroyed and he went on to Rashōmon gate. There, he encountered the warrior Watanabe no Tsuna who cut one of his arms off. Appearing as an old woman, Ibaraki is granted access to see the arm that is kept in a purified box. He manages to steal his arm and, reverting back into a demon, disappears into the sky.

Flowers of a Hundred Worlds (Momoyogusa): Asazuma in Her Boat (Asazuma-bune), 1909-10. Kamisaka Sekka (Japanese, 1866-1942). Color woodcuts with gold and silver; sheet: 29.9 x 22.1 cm (11 3/4 x 8 11/16 in.). This print from a set of three woodblock printed albums displays the graphic design prowess of Kamisaka Sekka. The images were first distributed one by one to subscribers to the series but later were reissued in bound form, like this book, for mass consumers. Each print features a vignette taken from nature or Japanese literature. Many of the scenes have a long history in Japan, originating in the 900s or 1000s and having been interpreted by all manner of artists since that time. Sekkas selections hew closely to precedents from the Rinpa style originated by painter Tawaraya S?tatsu (c. 1570-c. 1640) and calligrapher Honami K?etsu (1558-1637).

Why would the artist choose such an odd vantage point The lowness of the subject matter, apart from the hind view, is important in considering this print in context; it is an appropriate expression of the place: Naitō Shinjuku, near Yotsuya Gate, the western entrance to Edo. Founded in 1698, this quarter was intended from the start as a semiofficial center of prostitution and the first stop along Kōshū Highway out of Edo. The prostitutes at this down-to-earth settlement were described as "flowers blooming in the horse droppings of Yotsuya." Hiroshige pays close attention to the placement of the objects on the ground, from the straw-sandaled legs of the two horses and their groom to the five separate balls of manure. Asian

The story is a revenge tale of a samurai woman facing the downfall of her family. Several kabuki adaptations were developed, but this composition is not related to an actual performance. At its center is the beautiful Princess Wakana, who is in reality an earth spider, here unveiled as she is sitting on one. Her web spreads over all seven sheets behind six warriors ready to fight her.

Ichikawa Omezou () in the role of Yakko Ippei (). Toshusai Sharaku ( , active 1794 - 1795) is widely considered to be one of the great masters of the woodblock printing in Japan. Little is known of him, besides his ukiyo-e prints; neither his true name nor the dates of his birth or death are known with any certainty. His active career as a woodblock artist seems to have spanned just ten months in the mid-Edo period of Japanese history, from the middle of 1794 to early 1795.

The text at the bottom left mentions that he came from Hirado, in Hizen, was more than two meters long and weighed around 140 kilos.

Dance of the Beach Maidens late 18th century Torii Kiyonaga Japanese Although Narihira's story became a literary work in the ninth century, no textual record of his elder brother, Yukihira, is known before the late fourteenth century, when the famous playwright Kanze Zeami used the legend of the exiled courtier as the basis for a Noh drama. The tale of Yukihira was subsequently reworked in many different forms. In the early eighteenth century, the playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon created it as Matsukaze and Murasame, to be performed in the puppet theater. Later, his version of the play was performed as a Kabuki drama. Finally, the motif of the unfortunate sisters was extracted from the plot and choreographed as a dance to be performed between acts of unrelated plays. Illustrated here is the Seinan rebellion against the Meiji government, which occurred in 1877. In this play, Danjuro, in the center, plays Saijo Takamori, a thinly disguised version of Saigo Takamori, who was the leader of the actual rebellion. Torii Kotondo is known to have made only 21 prints - all of them images of bijin or beautiful women. They belong to the finest works of art of the Shin Hanga movement. Shin hanga ('new prints') was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taisho and Showa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th-19th century). The movement flourished from around 1915 to 1942, though it resumed briefly from 1946 through the 1950s. Inspired by European Impressionism, the artists incorporated Western elements such as the effects of light and the expression of individual moods, but focused on strictly traditional themes of landscapes (fukeiga), famous places (meisho), beautiful women (bijinga), kabuki actors (yakusha-e), and birds and flowers (kachoga).

Drunken Asaina ca. 1810 Katsushika Hokusai Japanese Hokusai's extraordinary achievement in print art has overshadowed his great talent as a painter. In this painting, Asaina Sabur, the legendary hero of Herculean strength, is enshrined in the small domain of the fan, so that his image takes on a more iconic quality. This fan, which was actually used, might have been a New Year's gift from a sake shop called Tsuruya, the name that appears on the box on which the drunken Asaina reclines. Hiroemon III debuted in Edo in the late 1740s and established his reputation playing villains. Here he is shown in the role of the bandit Asahara Jirō. His dramatic blue kumadori indicates the sinister nature of the character he is portraying.

Adachi Ginko (1853-1908) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist active during the 19th century. Born as Adachi Heishichi in 1853, he studied under the painter Goseda Horyu and began designing woodblock prints as early as 1870, though his earliest surviving prints date to 1873. He was very active as a member of the Utagawa school and worked in different genres, from portraits to landscapes, illustrations, satirical works and triptychs of contemporary events. His most successful work were a series of triptychs in the late 1880s called the 'Pictorial Outline of Japanese History'. Ginko was arrested and jailed in 1889 for his caricatures of the Meiji Emperor during the controversial era of the Meiji Constitution decree. He was imprisoned for a year, but continued to produce prints after his release, with his last known work dating to 1908, after which he disappears from any public record.

Ren Xiong (July 19; 1823 - November 23; 1857) was a Chinese painter from Xiaoshan, active during the late Qing dynasty. Ren belonged to the 'Shanghai school' in Chinese painting and is known for his bold and innovative style.

Usto Mumin, born Alexander Nikolaev (1897-1957), was a Russian artist who settled in Uzbekistan in 1920. He embraced Uzbek culture wholheartedly and adopted Islam, changing his name to Usto Mumin, while devoting himself to the study of Uzbek music and dance. As an adoptive Uzbek, he is considered a leading representative of Central Asian avant garde painting of the 1920s and 1930s.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (January 1, 1797 - April 14, 1862) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He is associated with the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi's preferred subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of samurai and legendary heroes. His artwork was affected by Western influences in landscape painting and caricature.

During late 1920s and 1930s Japan, a new poster style developed that reflected the growing influence of the masses in Japanese society. These art posters were strongly influenced by the emerging political forces of Communism and Fascism in Europe and the Soviet Union, adopting a style that incorporated bold slogans with artistic themes ranging from Leftist socialist realism through Stateism and state-directed public welfare, to Militarism and Imperialist expansionism. Though diverse in their messages, all bear the stamp of the ovebearing proletarian art of the time, reflecting shades of Nazi Germany, Socialist Russia and Fascist Italy in the Far East.
