Irezumi (, , , , , or ) is a Japanese word that refers to the insertion of ink under the skin to leave a permanent, usually decorative mark; a form of tattooing. The word can be written in several ways, each with slightly different connotations. The most common way of writing irezumi is with the Chinese characters or , literally meaning to 'insert ink'. The characters (also pronounced bunshin) suggest 'decorating the body'. is more esoteric, being written with the characters for 'stay' or 'remain' and 'blue' or 'green', and probably refers to the appearance of the main shading ink under the skin. (meaning 'tattooing') is rarely used, and the characters combine the meanings 'pierce', 'stab', or 'prick', and 'blue' or 'green', referring to the traditional Japanese method of tattooing by hand.

Japan: 'Actor Sakata Hangoro III'. Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei (1762-1819), c. 1790. Katsukawa Shun'ei (1762 - 13 December 1819), real name Isoda Shun'ei, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist from Tokyo. He joined the Katsukawa school of ukiyo-e artists, and mainly designed yakusha-e kabuki portraits, though he also dabbled in musha-e warrior prints and prints of sumo wrestlers. He became head of the Katsukawa school in 1800.

Water Margin (known in Chinese as Shuihu Zhuan, sometimes abbreviated to Shuihu), also known as Suikoden in Japanese, as well as Outlaws of the Marsh, Tale of the Marshes, All Men Are Brothers, Men of the Marshes, or The Marshes of Mount Liang, is a 14th century novel and one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Attributed to Shi Nai'an and written in vernacular Chinese, the story, set in the Song Dynasty, tells of how a group of 108 outlaws gathered at Mount Liang (or Liangshan Marsh) to form a sizable army before they are eventually granted amnesty by the government and sent on campaigns to resist foreign invaders and suppress rebel forces. In 1827, Japanese publisher Kagaya Kichibei commissioned Utagawa Kuniyoshi to produce a series of woodblock prints illustrating the 108 heroes of the Suikoden. The 1827-1830 series, called '108 Heroes of the Water Margin' or 'Tsuzoku Suikoden goketsu hyakuhachinin no hitori', made Utagawa Kuniyoshi's famous.

Japanese printers did not develop the technique of using multiple printing blocks for full-color images until the 1770s. This early print combines two enhancement techniques that were available to printmakers before that time: shiny, deep black lacquer (added to the figures sash) and watercolor (added in areas throughout). The revenge of the Forty-seven Ronin (Shi-ju-shichi-shi), also known as the Forty-seven Samurai, the Aki vendetta, or the Genroku Aki incident (Genroku aki jiken) took place in Japan at the start of the 18th century. One noted Japanese scholar described the tale as the country's 'national legend'. It recounts the most famous case involving the samurai code of honor, bushidi. The story tells of a group of samurai who were left leaderless (becoming ronin) after their daimyo (feudal lord) Asano Naganori was forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka, whose title was Ki zuke no suke. The ronin avenged their master's honor after patiently waiting and planning for two years to kill Kira. In turn, the ronin were themselves ordered to commit seppuku for committing the crime of murder. Scholar on a rock ca. 1880 Ren Yi (Ren Bonian) Chinese Rendered in highly controlled contours of uniform width and geometric perfection that appear engraved rather than brushed, this fan painting is probably an early work exemplifying Ren Yi's mastery of the archaistic idiom of his fellow townsman Chen Hongshou (1598-1652), who was an important model for each of the Four Rens. Ren depicted a scholar, out for a stroll, resting on a large strangely eroded garden rock. The gentleman has propped his walking stick in a crook of the stone and become engrossed in a book. By isolating this image against a blank background, Ren focuses our attention on the subtle interplay between the scalloped contours of the rock and the patterned folds of the man's robes, conveying a sense of the deep harmony between these kindred spirits..
