"Oh! Oh! Oh!": plate 14 from Othello (Act 5, Scene 2) etched 1844, reprinted 1900 Théodore Chassériau French After Delacroixs successful Hamlet lithographs appeared in 1843, Chassériau responded with a series of etchings devoted to Shakespeares Othello. This example encapsulates the plays climax in act 5, in which the title character is undone by his tragic error concerning his wife, Desdemona. Having smothered her, he now kneels despairingly by the bed as her attendant Emilia reveals that "honest Iago," who told Othello she had been unfaithful, is a jealous manipulator:"Now lay thee down and roar. / For thou has killed the sweetest innocent, / That did ever lift up eye."By choosing etching, Chassériau was able to both include fine detail and convey his expressive conception of form.. After the Victory, from "Illustrated London News" August 2, 1873 Richard Principal Leitch Faed made his name painting Scottish subjects. Trained in Edinburgh, he moved to London and was elected a Royal Academician in 1864. This image conveys the devastating impact on a humble Scots family of the loss of their soldier-breadwinner father. David Wilkie had helped to revive the popularity of genre painting, and Faed's imagery combined history, portraiture and genre during a period of rising interest in the Scottish past encouraged by Sir Walter Scotts novels, and Queen Victorias annual visits to Balmoral Castle from 1857. School for Gallantry May 10, 1802 Thomas Rowlandson In this fifth print of a group of eight, a blue-uniformed suitor discovers his lady-love sleeping in the arms of a red-coated rival. Scattered instruments and a monkey wearing the dozing officer's hat and holding his whip, indicate that frenzied dancing has taken place, while Rousseau's "Eloise" ("Julie, or the New Heloise") lying open on the floor points to illicit passion. Rowlandson etched this set after drawings by Willyams, a university-educated lieutenant-colonel from Cornwall who also supplied supporting satirical text under the pseudonym Joel McCringer. Rowlandson's characteristic elegance does not disguise the dark human impulses being satirized. Modern education, it is suggested, does little to teach self-control, wisdom or empathy..
