Atomic Warfare Defense Precautions In America -- The Entrance to a vast underground shelter at Linlithgo, New York: The main entrance will be in the shaft at the left, where a 36-ton steel door containing a time lock will be installed. The shelter is being built by the Knaust Brothers at the site of one of the world's largest areas for the cultivation of mushrooms. In the event of the use of atomic weapons the shelter would be used for the protection of valuable records, intricate machinery, historical books, and prominent works of art. The shelter consists of 1,000 concrete vaults, which are air-conditioned and equipped with scores of safety devices. The first 400 vaults of the 1,000,000-dollar enterprise were expected to be ready at the beginning of May. In front of the main entrance will be erected an administration building and guard house. October 14, 1953.
