Underground Factory- Everyday Life in An Underground Factory, Probably Spring Quarry, Corsham, Wiltshire, England, 1942 Cooks at work in the canteen kitchen of the hostel attached to the underground factory. A row of large ovens can be seen in this large warehouse-type room. According to the original caption: 'thousands of meals are prepared every day. It is modern, efficient and clean. Girls favour a cold meal during the lunch hour. They get a hot meal in the evenings'.

The World Buys North Atlantic Fish.Fish fillets pass in baskets on overhead conveyors to the sorting and weighing benches and then to the quick-freeze batteries (right). These work or the contact-plate freezing principle, in which packs of fish are placed between freezing plates in which are coils through which the refrigerant circulates. When the packs are loaded, a pre-determined degree of pressure is put on the plates so that the packs are compressed and frozen at the same tine. Electrical Engineering Works Goes To War, England, 1942 A view of women at work at rows of benches in the cartridge fuse shop at this electrical engineering works, somewhere in the Midlands. Girls start work at this factory as soon as they leave school, and the average age is 16. According to the original caption, 9 months before this photograph was taken, this works was a shoe factory. Cartridge fuses are made for incorporation in fuse gear used for the protection of electrical apparatus against excess current.

The British Reoccupation of Singapore Gramophones ready for distribution to military units by the welfare section of the Services Amenities Store in Singapore. Here Allied service personnel could buy such things as sweets, tobacco, indoor games, toiletries, stationery and sports equipment. The store also organsied welfare supply to military units of footballs, football kit, gramophones complete with records, wireless sets and even pianos. The fact that such a range of good could be purchased under one roof and at reasonable prices meant that Allied servicemen and women could avoid buying goods on the Black Market.
