The arrival of Henri III of France at the Lido in Venice in 1574 1591 Anonymous Following his brothers death in May 1574, Henri III of France returned from Poland to France to claim the crown, traveling via Venice, where the triumphal arch shown here was raised to welcome him. The arch was designed by the architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) and based on the ancient Arch of Septimius Severus in Rome. It led onto a loggia set up on the Lido that was decorated with paintings by leading artists Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-1594) and Paolo Veronese (1528-1588). The members of each guild in Venice prepared a ship decorated to reflect their profession; fifteen of the most important are identified here with small inscriptions. This print was made in 1591, some seventeen years after the event—demonstrating how the visit, regarded as a state occasion, was seen as worthy of memorialization.. Pont-au-change, Paris 1854 Charles Meryon French This etching is among the most expansive views of Meryons Paris prints and contains more narrative detail than the majority of the works in the series. A drowning man in the foreground reaches out toward a boat whose occupants, distracted, gesture toward a balloon inscribed "Esperanza" (Hope, in Spanish) that hovers in the sky above. Pedestrians on the bridge also wave at the balloon as a funeral cortege passes by. Meryon composed a separate plate of verse to accompany this etching. It begins, "O divine hope! light balloon!" but concludes pessimistically, describing hope as a "false mirage.". Pont-au-change, Paris 371937

Buildings by the Thames at Chelsea, Walter Greaves, 1871, England, etching, Walter Greaves (1846-1930) was the son of a London boat-builder and trained as a shipwright. In 1863 Greaves met J. M. Whistler, who taught Walter and his brother, Henry, to paint. Greaves and Whistler remained close friends for over twenty years until Whistler, whose popularity was rising, surrounded himself with a new, posher circle of friends. Greaves then found it impossible to sell his work. In 1911 Greaves's work was exhibited at the Goupil Galleries to considerable acclaim, but it was not long before Whistler's admirers unjustly accused Greaves of plagiarism. This condemned him to obscurity for a decade or more. Finally, a number of prominent younger artists - Augustus John, William Nicholson and William Rothenstein - rescued Greaves and his reputation. Another exhibition was arranged, he was elected an honorary member of the Chelsea Arts Club and in 1922 a place of retirement was found for him at the Ch
