Joan of Arc 1879 Jules Bastien-Lepage French Joan of Arc, the medieval teenaged martyr from the French province of Lorraine, gained new status as a patriotic symbol when France ceded part of the territory to the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). Bastien-Lepage, a native of Lorraine, depicts the moment when Saints Michael, Margaret, and Catherine appear to the peasant girl in her parents garden, rousing her to fight the English invaders in the Hundred Years War. Critics at the Salon of 1880 praised Bastien-Lepages use of pose and facial expression to convey Joans spiritual awakening, but found the inclusion of the saints at odds with his naturalistic style. Breton Peasant Woman Holding a Taper Jules Breton (French, 1827-1906). , ca. 1869. Oil on canvas, 12 x 9 in. (30.5 x 22.9 cm). In this image of a woman holding a rosary and candle, Jules Breton conveyed the devotion associated with the people of Brittany, a conservative, religious region of northeastern France. The work is a study for a figure in one of his many paintings of pardons, Brittanys annual penitential rites in which peasants in traditional dress take part in a procession. Many urban male artists in the nineteenth century perceived Brittany—especially its women, whom they nearly always depicted wearing their distinctive white headdresses—as “primitive,” pious avatars of a culture unspoiled by modern life. A Woman Seated beside a Vase of Flowers (Madame Paul Valpinçon) 1865 Edgar Degas French The juxtaposition of the prominent bouquet and the off-center figure, gazing distractedly to the right, exemplifies Degas’s aim of capturing individuals in seemingly casual, slice-of-life views. The sitter is probably the wife of the artist’s schoolboy friend Paul Valpinçon; Degas immensely enjoyed outings to their country house, Ménil-Hubert, and the dahlias, asters, and gaillardias in the bouquet would suggest a late summer visit. The painting was preceded by a pencil drawing of the woman, also dated 1865 (Fogg Museum, Cambridge, Mass.). Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #6170. The Old Italian Woman 1857 Edgar Degas French During the formative years that Degas spent working in Italy, 1856 to 1859, he made copies after old masters as well as studies of men and women in local costume, both subjects popular among the community of French artists who flocked to Rome. This painting combines a figural style and palette reminiscent of Poussin with an eye for realist detail, evident in the rendering of the womans wizened skin and gnarled hands. Monumental and unsparing, the picture avoids the picturesque sentimentality common to many contemporary images of peasants and beggars. James Whistler (1834-1903) was an American Painter and etcher. His lawsuit against Ruskin was an example of his efforts to publicize his art. He was influenced by Velasquez and Japanese print artists. Among his best known paintings are Old Battersea Bridge, Portrait of My Mother, The Artist's Studio, and Nocturne St. Mark's Venice. This painting, titled Portrait of Thomas Carlyle, was puchased by the Glasgow Corporation, in spite of protests, Bought directly from Whistler, it cost 1000 pounds.
